hi, i'm afraid this is somethign of an advertisement, and if they're not allowed then i'm very sorry...

BUT i'm writing a front end for the amazingly good MPlayer (not windows media player...) for Linux, and it's MEncoder general purpose encoder. Under windows i never managed to encode a dvd in under 6 hours, fps of 5 or 6... but under linux I always get at least 20fps, with even better quality (obviously it all depends what i used to (try) to use on windoze... flaskMpeg i think it was.. nasty nasty nasty).

So anyway, if anyone here is wise enough ;-) to use Linux, my gtk based front end makes ripping dvd's to divx 3/4/5 and absolute doddle.

if anyone feels like trying it... http://acidrip.thirtythreeandathird.net

Hi,

You are correct, advertising is not liked very much on this forum. However as is the case with free, open source applications nobody makes any money with it and it can be improved by everyone. That is why these kinds of advertisements generally pass through. As I see it open source development can only be a benefit to everyone.

I think it is very good that people finally start making some encoding applications for OS'es other than Windows, because those have always been in short supply. Although I don't use linux myself, I'm sure there are people around here who will find this program very useful.

Keep up the good work!

thanks for the positive response. you (i.e. everyone with at least half a brain) really should giev linux a try, the number of complex video editing applications on linxu is still farily small, but things like virtualdub are being ported slowly. But like i said, for standard (well actually quite complex in many areas) dvd encoding, MEncoder is an utterly superb tool, and the encoding libraries it uses produce divx5 quality output (if you want divx5 that is.. i think it currently outputs to aobtu 20 file formats) in 1/3 of the time it took me under windows. Well, that would have been 1/3 of the time if windows didn't crash EVERY single time.. but that's not the point. pick a simple distro like mandrake, install linux and mplayer, and you'll never want to go back to nasty nasty windows!
