Hi there...

Just installed my SONY....and encountered my first problems.... (sigh):( Using Firmware 1.0d (pitty the 1.0e is a dead link at SONY)

Installed Record Now MAX 4.5 and made a data disc containing 6 DivX movies. Total of approx. 4.3 GB.

Everything went OK. Chose the Test first then write option and @ 1 speed (and 120 mins) later ZZZZZZZ (I don't have any high speed medias)the disc popped out with a write OK.

Now when I put the disc in my SCSI DVD Toshiba it cannot read it. Spins up and down, making "squeeking sounds"... When put in the SONY DRU500A in my other PC it cannot be read either, Actually ONE!! time it could ??

Now when I put the DVD in my DELL Inspiron 8000 DVD drive everything is just fine. Drive Label I gave the disc is read and so on. No probs...

Why is that ?? Anyone out there having the same problems or knows what I'm doing wrong ??

Didn't close the disk. Using UDF and Joliet in Record Now MAX (default settings)

Just now making another disc with closing option set and no joliet...

I'm confused....

Please help anyone..

Kind Regards from Denmark :-D

Are you using a DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW disc?

Also what brand is it?

And closing the DVD should help with compatibility.

Dooh!! silly me not describing the media.. sorry..

I'm using DVD-R. 1 x speed Vivastar. Not the best. Bought 50 of them, and not many of them is accepted by the burner, but some of them is and now I actually made another DVD-R and closed it this time. Same thing. Unable to read the disc in the SONY and my Toshiba SCSI, but the DVD in my portable reads it fine.

I experimented with unloading PlexTools and CloneCD Tray thingie, but it's the same

Could it be some program or driver or something disabling it or ???

I'm confused....... Please reply...

Regards..

Firts thing I would do is throw the VIVASTAR discs in the bin.

Next buy yourself a good DVD-RW disc from a well known manufacturer (TDK, Pioneer, Maxwell etc).

Do a whole heap of testing on that DVD-RW disc to ensure you have your ripping/burning process figured out. Then go ahead and buy some ritek/primedisc DVD-R's and start using them.

sasquatch:

the way how you described it, it appears to me that you only created a data dvd that contained 6 divx movies. i hope you are aware that you need to convert those movies into mpeg2 streams to be able to play them in a stand-alone dvd-player... you might want to check the doom9 guides for more info.

Ooooh yes. I know.

I'm not trying to make some DVD movie or anything. Only using the DVD recorder (for now) as storage instead of burning each DivX on to one disc. Only taking advantage of the 4.38 GB of storage on the DVD compared to the 700 MB on CD-R's.

Actually I might have "solved" the problem my self.

Tryied burning the same DivX movies to the SONY DVD+RW that came with the drive, and there's no problem at all with reading it in my DVD in my portable DELL or in the SONY drive. Only my SCSI Toshiba DVD will not read it, but perhaps it is unable to read DVD+RW medias (and other DVD+r or DVD-RW) I don't know....

So maybe my problem is the crap media I'm using. Considering the SONY drive will only accept every 5-8 or 10 media I throw at it.

hey man i would definately throw those discs away... www.supermediastore.com has great deals on riteks that work very well with our drive...they also play on a lot of dvd players....also as metnioned convert your files if you want them to play...but the drive is very picky about good discs so that should be your first focus..hope this helps

Can the Sony drive write on Datasafe/Datawrite -R/+R ??

Don't know yet, but some friendly person from this forum actually (thanks alot Michael) has mailed me a "testpack" of Datawrite DVD-R's from www.cdr-by-mail.co.uk

I should recieve them today. I will post my experiences when I know more.

BTW: Someone inhere having some info on hot to just burn a "normal" data DVD-R that I'm able to read in all my PC DVD drives.

what should I choose in Record MAX ? Joliet file system or not, and what's all that about UDF 1.02 - 1.50 and 2.0 ??

Kind Regards

hey let me know how those dvds work...im always down to try new media esp if it costs less than $0.83!! also, from my experencies recordnow has some bugs to work out before everything functions well with sony. i would burn using nero 5.5.9.1.7 you can get it at www.ahead.com. i burnt all my mp3 collection to backups using this without any problems.. hope this helps

Let me know if you have any luck with those media from www.cdr-by-mail.co.uk. I live in the UK and need a source of good cheap dvd-r media.

I've just recently ordered the DRU500A and am hoping it wont just be compatible with the more expensive disks.

My Success Story is with the following media:

Thats Write DVD-R 1x speed
Pioneer DVD-RW 1x speed
Sony-DVD+RW 2.4x speed

I have used Recordnow Max 4.5 will all my burnings......with the latest pxengineupdate358 from the veritas site not from the stomp.inc site .....also i am using frimware 1.0d

Haven't had success with (Coasters) the following:

Imation DVD-R 1x
Nashua DVD-R 1x

(Both came out bad....so i would suggest for people in europe to use Thats Write or Princo!!!!

Hope this information might help :)))

Hi I had the same problem before that the dvds I burned wasnt readble on my computer but on any other computer or set top player it worked just fine so what I did was uninstall every burning software I had and then it started to work on my computer too, and I find out that it was vobinstant who installed its drivers for the drive that made it act like this so I went on and used nero without installing vobinstant and it worked just great.
so maybe my experince will help you, I dont know but it is worth a try.

Best Regards

Thank You Kandor. I will try uninstalling my different burnig software and see if that helps. Then installing them one by one to see what program could be causing my problems...

I don't have a burner in my laptop PC so that could be the reason it always reads the DVD-R's....

Allthough I don't use VOBInstant some other software could block my DVD sccess I guess.

Did anyone notice that your system is heavily misconfigurated, and that there are thousands of buffer underruns?

1x speed writing takes 60 mins, not 120!

sasquatch
20th November 2002, 23:06
Hmm You should really read the post You reply to before writing anything like that. I stated that I used the test and then!! write. And it's two seperate 60 mins operations if done @ 1 x speed.

Even I finished 2nd grade and knows that 60 + 60 = eeerhhm!!! Someone please help here......

Please consider reading before writing (and making statements about bufferunderuns and misconfigured systems)

No problem.....:D

I'm a complete newbee myself, but if the writetime actually was 120 mins at write only setting, then perhaps one should consider checking other things first.....:)

No hard feelings.... you German.... you having cheap DVD-R... you GRRR....(just ordered from Germany)

Hmmm,

I give you the Sony DRU500A (1st Generation drive) have they even finished testing it before sending it out to the general public!
Mine arrived yesterday, I set it up, and started Nero 5.9.9.17 (supports the Sony DRU500A). I then formed a compilation of files and used the 'Sony +RW) disk that came with the burner to produce the burn. Anyway I switched of any 'test' burns (It's a +RW disk) and set it going, 1 hour later and the burner had completed 8% of the disk, Nero showed no errors! Anyway, I cancelled the burn after 1 1/2 hours and only 12% of this disk had been burnt!?!?! Is this ment to be this slow, my A04 Pioneer at work doesn't do this? Anyway seemed the firmware rev was 1.0c, I upgraded this to 1.0d last night so i'll try again and see if this makes any diferrence!
