DVD-R's freeze half way through playback

Small problem I've been having with my APEX-600. Movie starts fine bu then freezes approximately half way through. Doesn't matter what movie or its length. I'm using some kind of no name brand blank dvd-r, Pink top, purple base. My process goes something like this. All my source DVD's are NTSC region 1 material.

1.Rip movie with DVD Decrypter
(processed just for 16:9 video and english AC3 track no subs no
menus straight movie)
2.Run DVD2AVI 1.76 to extract AC3 from VOB's and to create a .d2v
project. Forced film as well (this hasnt caused any problems).
3.VFAPI converter to frameserve for CCE the .d2v project.
4.CCE 2.66.01.06 for re-encoding video to lower bitrate.
usually use 2pass VBR with the help from CCEGuesser (big thanks
there)
5.Perform A 2:3 pull down when required.
6.Get A chapter list from Chapter Xtractor
7.Fire Up DVD Maestro, import all assets and chapter points
Compile, Create Image and Burn (using either DVD Maestro or Prassi
Primo

So heres the hardware
P4 2.4 Ghz, 512 DDR, 60 GB and a Pionneer-A03 (1.90 firmware)running XP

I'm 80% sure that this is a god damn crappy media problem but I just need confirmation. :devil:

Maybe you guys can suggest the best *affordable* material and if anyone knows a EXCELLENT place in Canada to acquire media at a good price let me know.

well, its most definately the media, but i have nfi where to get good ones where you are ;)

now would you like 2000 (there is only 2000 left out of the 20000 we ordered...) DVD-5 discs that were manufactured on a modified cd pressing plant? they do exactly what you say your DVD-R does (well all except for 1 in every thousand anyway).

moral? the cheapest is isnt the best, probable ever ;)
