While trying to keep the holier-than-thou attitude to a minimum, I'll try to explain my situation.
I've done nandub encodes, DivX5 encodes, XVid encodes, VCD, SVCD at every files size. I've tried every noise redction and video restoration filter known to man, I know CCE SP, TMPEG, virtualdub, all the audio processing command line based programs, and every avisynth command out there. I know hwo to make switchable subs on SVCD's ogg/vorbis, how to make switchable audio in SVCD's, DivX, ogg/vorbis. I've done video capturing and encoding. I can problem shoot a process, and know at least 3 methods for doing every step of encoding ( i.e, iVTC(decomb, tmpeg), resizing(simple resize, bicubic a/b), audio processing(resmapling, encoding), etc). I've even made a website for DivX and SVCD encoding(being updated very shortly). Let's face it I've done/experimented until I've done pretty much everything except for DVD authoring, which I don't have a DVD burner.. so not interested in that yet.
Here's my dilema -- I'm bored of encoding. I'm sure ther are people out there like me who have tried, experimented, and mastered every program/filter/method out there, like me and need something new. Someone tell me of another aspect of encoding that I have yet to explore that I have not yet tried. I've copied every DVD I could get my hands onto and I'm just flat bored. I think its the reward system that encoding has to offer you, its like psycology, if you do somethign and see it work, it makes you want to do it again, that's why encoding becomes addictive for people, well encoding has lost its luster for me because I've tried everything I can think of, so someone please help me.. I need a new facet of encoding to explore, something obscure.. or maybe something that I've just flat out missed!

Why dont you change from USING tools to MAKING them ... its an old misunderstanding that only coders/developers can contribute to opensource projects, in fact anybody can help ( website creation, writing docs, making guides, etc. ).
You could help
VirtualDubMod : The summary of all great Vdub mods ( http://virtualdubmod.sf.net )
MCF : Container ( http://mcf.sf.net )
UCI : Codec API ( http://uci.sf.net )
USF : Universal Subtitle Format ( to be founded soon )
Isnt this a real new challenge ;-) ???

buy a DVD burner, re-author multiangle and seamless branching titles.. that's a new definition of fun. It will take you a while till you can do that without actually watching what you're doing on screen...

If you're bored with using things (as I got a couple years ago), I would suggest learning how to program and creating your own tools. Seriously.
Or, polish up on philosophy (http://www.utm.edu/research/iep/) and become an elaborate troll (http://www.kuro5hin.org/user/Keeteel/comments) on k5 (http://www.kuro5hin.org).

Why not pass your expertise on to everyone else?
The guides I've read make my head hurt. I want to see well written guides and ways to get vob-divx either easily or quickly (or both). I'm sure each process has it's pros and cons (or is everyone re-inventing the wheel??) so why not tell people who don't want to spend all there time testing every possibility?
Also why not try and find the ultimate encoding machine, one money no object and one slightly more realistic.

yeah I spend all ym time on irc.aniverse.com. I come back from class and there are like 5 messages with questions abotu encoding.. I'm always a fan of the ever-popular:
What program do you use to encode?
That one just makes me smile. Yeah I've taught 3 or 4 people how to encode online..takes about 3-4 hours, but its worth it. I think I switch to help making the tools. Would like to help XVid perhaps I'll check into that. Thanks guys

How bout you start watching all those movies you encoded?
I'm actually being serious. I've seen many people who get so obsessed with encoding movies or downloading movies/warez and adding to their collection yet they never actually use any of the stuff they get.
Even if you've watched every movie in your collection, grab one and start over. I keep the director's commentary in all of my SVCDS so I always have an excuse to go back and watch every movie at least twice.
If you need a new hobby then buy a guitar, its kept me occupied for the last 12 years.

Uli, Seti can become boring after a while, too...
I'm just crunching my 1.685st work unit, but somehow it doesn't have the same spirit anymore - I don't know what it is, but I just thought about quitting it today. On the other hand - I don't have anything else to keep my cpu busy all day long. I can't capture so much that I can encode 18 hours a day ;)

Learn Scenarist, and then let me know how to work the thing

having 3 other roomates and no one dating we watch about 3-4 movies a week, I've seen about 95% of my movies, and I too keep director commentaries in my movies he he, nice to meet someone who does that also. I always use mono at 64 or 80Kbps depending on the total video bitrate used. I could watch them with the audio commentaries that would be fun.
I'm waiting on DVD burner prices/speed ratio to come excessivly down.. maybe in one year or so, then I'll start to learn senarist.. that will keep me going for abotu a million years. I recently looked at the DVD credits to the american pie special addition and they used Scenearist (and by that token I'm assuming that most professional companies).
Anyway. yeah I'm goign to try to get into helping XVid and maybe ogg, because I don't care what all your opinions are, they ARE the best video/audio codecs out there right now, hands down. DivX5 a close second.. but its too blurred. And when b-frames are introduced and stablized.. oh man.. watch out :)
And as for SETI..get real, do you guys know the lack of computing power for research there is right now... I think perhaps I'll lend out some processing time to random university research

Go and get a girl-friend and have sex! :D
No, seriously, maybe shooting films yourself and exploring the DV universe may be a challenge for you. You'll find many interesting topics like using effects, working with sound, creating animations, etc.

Go and get a girl-friend and have sex! Yes, seriously ! Failing that, thought of hiring a prostitute, it'll probably cost less in the long run ...

so i dunno what you are doing for a living already, but when i was about to get bored with ripping and all i went and found a really nice job in a company that does a lot with video from cutting over dvd-authoring to post-production.
when i thought i knew quite a lot i realized after a day that i am a bloody unprofessional rookie, lol.
best be sure i am NOT bored anymore ;)

Here's something to do if you're bored with watching TV:
Develop killer app any idiot like me can use on his Wal-Mart computer to transfer his old VHS home videos to VCD or SVCD so he can send CDs to his family to watch on their DVD players.
(((Atom))) has it right, you just think you know what you're doing until you try to make a living doing it.

Hi,
you can completely start authoring with scenarist as the burner is only there to store/master and test compatibility. You can make the complete structure on your hdd and testdrive it with powerDVD, resolve most issues etc. I suggest you just start and then find that you can use all your creativity with animated subpictures (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37074) or animated menus or whatever.
If you're going to work on the h.264 i think you'll need to borrow your roommates' processorpower as well
BTW, I too keep the commentaries (EvilDead2 is the best!) and burn to dvd+r without splitting, so would like all 2cd-movies to have no extra seconds at the end of cd1 or the beginning of cd2 -> easier to merge!

Maybe you can fugure out why rempeg2 causes certain scenes to
flicker slightly in AttackOfTheClones. Especially the one with
the princess being attacked while shes sleeping.
rempeg2 is my favorite since its a straight vob to m2v conversion and easy to remux back into ifoedit. All other movies have had no issues.
thx
