Of the four programs you mentioned, I'd concur with auenf. Although I haven't actually used DVD Workshop yet, I HAVE used the other three, and, apart from Movie Factory, which is very limited, the other two are...well let's just say I'd hate you to spend a lot of money only to be disappointed. I keep meaning to try a demo of Ulead DVD Workshop, since it seems to offer a decent feature set for the money, and I have seen many many users praise it.

My best advice to you would be to download a demo of DVD Workshop, play with it and see:

1) if it WORKS.

2) If it doesn't keep crashing every 2 minutes, like some of the other apps you mentioned do ( )

3) if it suits your purposes

If so, I'd go with it, rather than the other 3.

I've grown to dislike RecordNow Max, although it is built around quite a stable engine, and has a loyal following. My main gripes with it are to do with the GUI itself, which I personally find frustratingly limiting. You might feel otherwise, though, so it would be unfair of me to rule this program out.

Nero is constantly undergoing revision, and has it's fair share of bugs, Despite this, however, I really rate the program highly. It is incredibly flexible and easy to use, and, provided you don't use one of the builds with known problems for DVD writing (such as 5.590), you should get plenty of success with it.

Also take a look at DVD Decrypter, which now supports burning of DVD images (Nero is beginning to offer this function too, but has not ironed out bugs in this respect yet, so I'd avoid writing DVD images with Nero for the time being). I've only written one DVD-R with Decryptor, and it did a nice job.

I've never used VOB Instant DVD. When the A04 was originally released, many retail packages were supplied as standard with VOB Instant DVD, and I recall many users having no end of problems with the software at the time. Purely on the basis of these reports, I'd be inclined to leave the program alone.

Another good choice for DVD burning is GEAR. This is really stable in my experience, although I do find that the GUI looks a little dated. Notwithstanding the dated look, though, it is superbly stable, and uses industry standard DVD formatting. I like it.

So, this is not gospel, it's simply my personal opinion:- if it were ME, I'd be inclined to use either Nero or GEAR. Nero is the better all-rounder, if you intend to wirte CDRs as well, but if you are talking purely about writing DVDRs, then I strongly recommend that you take a look at GEAR. If you wish to use Freeware, then DVD Decrypter deserves your attention too.
