View Full Version : Best quality regardless of filesize?

Hi, I'm sort of a newbie in a sense that I know quite a lot in theory, but haven't done much practical video work till now.

My question is about divx5pro encoding: I want to encode something to achieve best possible quality without paying attention to storage space (at least that's not a primary concern, or I'd be using uncompressed format) - I'm talking about compression settings here - 2pass of course.

I guess this question has been posted 100 times before, but a quick search didn't reveal anything... or I didn't know what to look for :)

Thanks,

GL

Hi and welcome to the forum-

If file size isn't a consideration, then encode at 1 pass quality-based set for quant 2 or 100%. 2 pass encoding is only useful for achieving the best quality for a given file size.

Thanks, I assumed that two-pass means more quality, but now it makes sense.

I'll have to play with the quantization also...

If you don't care about file size then just rip the vobs from the dvd to your hdd. Most movies average 4GB and some are as low as 2.5gb (eg. Not Another Teen Movie, Disney's Dinosaur).

Get yourself a 120gb hdd and backup 30 movies for instant access to full quality dvd rips :)

I'd also add some noise to start with to get rid of the blocking that it's sometimes very annoying in dark scenes even at full quality - try to locate information about blockbuster in the avisynth forum.
