View Full Version : Sound out of sync with Video

I have used DVD2SVCD at least 20 times, but in two instances (Jaws and the Princess Bride)the audio trails the video by 2 or 3 seconds after burning it onto a CD-R using Nero. Is there something I should set differently or could it be a problem with the DVD. I redid Jaws three times, even ripping another title in between and the audio and video and Jaws was still off by a couple of seconds. I would appreciate anyones thoughts on this. Thanks in advance.

Please do a search of the forum, as this has been discussed quite a bit and your problem will likely be solved with the results you recieve from your search.

Please also post your logfile, so we can see the settings you used.

The most common cause of sync issues is using an unsupported DVD ripper (other than the Internal Routines or vStrip), SmartRipper is especially known to cause sync problems.

I am sorry if I missed this discussion earlier. I did a search on this and multiple episodes on DVD's. I found an answer in the forum for the multiple episodes but not the video and audio sync problems. I will keep looking though and thanks for your patience. However, in the mean time here is the log:

When you play the BBmpeg_muxed_file??.mpg files in WinDVD or PowerDVD off the HD are they out of Sync as well?

Other things noticed in the log:

Please increase that audio bitrate. 128Kbit give many players fits and trust me it will sound so much better at 192. You won't notice the video difference at all by just dropping it 60Kbit.

You have set the cd size to 740mb. Are you using 74 Minute CD-R discs or 80 Minute discs? If you use 80 minute you should be setting the cd size to 800.

Thank you for responding... Yes, when I play the BBmpeg_muxed_file??.mpg files in WinDVD off of the harddrive they are out of Sync as well. It is really strange, it has only happened to Jaws and the Princess Bride, every other movie was perfect. This occurred even after ripping several other movies and then coming back to them. I have loaded the latest update to DVD2SVCD and I am trying to rip the Princess Bride again. If that does not work I plan on obtaining another copy of the movie to see if it was the DVD.

Thanks for the tip on the audio, I will change immediately.

As far as CD's, I am using Fuji's 80 minute, 700mb cd's. I am a little unsure of whether I should change the setting to 700 or move it to 800 like you suggest. Thanks again for all of the help.

Please check the advanced values in the bbMPEG tab. Click the Advanced DropDown button, and see what values there is down below.

Hi, I tried to check the advanced values in the bbMPEG tab but could not find the advanced drop down button that you were talking about. However, I did find an advanced drop down menu in the encoder. Just in case I will list those values from the CCE advanced settings:

Linear quantizer scale, zigzag scanning order and progressive frames boxes were checked in the MPEG2 video settings. Intra DC decision - Auto 10 was not checked.

GOP Settings:

M=3
N/M=5
Seq Header every = 1
Restrict auto 1 frame insertion and close all GOPs were not checked.

Also, I tried to rip the DVD with version 1.1.0 build 1a and encountered the same problem. You hear the MGM lion roaring while on the screen it mentions that this movie has been modified to fit your screen. As a result, the audio and video end up being off by 2 seconds the entire time. Again, thank you for any help you may give.

In the Misc. Tab / dvd2svcd level - Select Advanced Level.

mlkirch
14th November 2002, 02:34
I selected the advance level in the misc. tab for the dvd2svcd level. However, after trying to rip it again I still had the same problem of the audio being two or three seconds faster than the video. Unless I get anymore suggestions, I will probably try another DVD of the same title. Thanks for everyones help.

I think you are missing the point. What was said by DVD2SVCD in two posts is to be combined into one thought.

To be able to give him the answer he needs for the BBmpeg info you must change the level of DVD2SVCD to Advanced on the Misc Tab. This will then give you the ability to see the Advanced dropdown arrow on the BBmpeg tab. By clicking on this a new window will pop-up. He would like to know what numbers/settings are in that window.

Sorry about that.. Here are the settings within the bbMPEG tab.

Program Stream = SVCD
VBR, Write program end code, add SVCD scan offsets are checked.
Computer Bitrate = use max
Time Stamps = all frames
pulldown = Auto
Forced Max Rate = 0
Pack Options = Size = 2324, packets = 1
Buffersize = Video = 230, Audio1 = 4, Audio2 = 4
Startup Delays = Pack = 0, Video = 180, Audio1 = 180, and Audio2 = 180.

Thanks for your help....

I am having similar problems only with the latest version 1.10b1 (and 1a). I never had problems with previous versions, many DVD back-ups.

Now Spiderman Region 1. Using new feature "use frame selection" AND CVD subs I get the delay. Taking OFF the CVD subs, voila, no delay. I see above that you are using neither subs or frame selection so probably no relation in our respective problems but.....

Second back-up in a row "Y tu mama tambien". Using CVD subs and frame selection, there is a delay. I ripped with all three methods, internal, vstrip and smart-ripper. Nothing seemed to change the outcome. Now, I am currently going at it again......

Internal Routines --> frame selection --> permanent subtitles

I will write back with a report. If it doesn't work, I am going to try again with 1.09b3.

Thanks again DVD2SVCD

Thanks for replying...

I have not had any problems with the new version of DVD2SVCD. However, I continue to have this minor problem of backing up those two movies. My theory, and it is only a theory, is this is only occurring when the screen pops up stating that this movie has been changed to fit your screen. The sound picks up right with this warning instead of waiting two or three seconds, thus throwing off the audio and video. I have not had any problems backing up any widescreen DVD's or other DVD's without this warning. I plan on trying this on another DVD of the same title, and also by skipping the first chapter to see if the audio and video are in sync. Thanks for all of the help.

I think you might be right about that screen. I am surprised it even was ripped.

See if you can't use frame selection to get rid of that.

One other thing to check is make sure there are no 0 length chapters at the beginning of the movie. Just select internal routines for ripping and click on the time shown on the conversion tab the same way you would for cutting chapters.
If the first chapter is just a few seconds maybe unselect it and hope it's that "formatted to fit ...." section and this restores sync.

It turns out that this is my problem as well. There is a 5 second warning.n Using IfoEdit I can see that there is a 5 second cell preceding the main movie.

Switching back to an older version, as I mentioned above, or getting rid of the subs made absolutely no difference. All three ripping methods, Internal, vStrip, other (SmartRipper) were unable to get rid of the problem cell. Trying frame selection and getting the start point past this part of the movie did not help as well. I think my next option is use smart ripper and uncheck this cell and then rerip
or possibly using IfoEdit, a program that I am not really familiar with, to get rid of the cell.

sandchar99 if you use Internal routines how long does DVD2SVCD say the first chapter is?

If it's 5 seconds then you could simply unselect it and then rip everything else.

If it's much longer then other methods will have to be used.

At least for my attempt, the Internal routines do not separate out the opening warning screen. I have noticed that the first chapter is about 5 seconds shorter for the widescreen version, so it seems it is built into the first chapter which is 2 min and 29 seconds long.

I tried to backup the Princess Bride DVD with the wide screen edition and DVD2SVCD worked perfectly. It is the same DVD but one side is the wide screen and on the other is the full screen view that bares the warning about the format changing. Thanks.

I knew always to use internal routines first. Out of habit, I always check the chapter lengths to make sure there are no 0 second length chapters at the beginning. No short chapter of 5 seconds duration appeared in the chapter lisr.

Methods that did not work:

1) Internal routines
2) vStrip
3) SmartRipper
4) Internal routines and frame selection to delete the problematic 5 second cell.
5) vStrip and frame selection to delete the problematic 5 second cell.
6) IfoEdit to edit the IFO to not play that first 5 second cell.

Method that WORKED

7) Smartripper, uncheck only that first cell of the two cells (ie, not the second cell) in that first chapter. Load the IFO file into DVD2SVCD and rerip with Internal routines. Proceed as normal. I still see that warning about the format changing at the beginning and I could edit it out if I wanted, but I didn't.

Note: I'm still not sure that it is necessary to re-rip. Everyone talks about async audio-video with SmartRipper. I've never had that problem.
