don't use xmpeg. it's inferiour to mpeg2dec->avisynth->vdub.
and obviously it's not built to cope with the compromises that have been taken to support bframes.

Well, my b-frame avi crashed, too.
The tools I used are DVD2avi->AVIUTLI->VFAPI->VirtualDub->Nandub
(I know it's a long way, but I just start Ripping :) )
But the b-framed avi just crash until I unchecked the "USE XVID"
in ffdshow, maybe u can try that

VirtualDub->Nandub
Huh? Is there any reason to do this?

I think you need Nandub to use VBR mp3 audio. I'm not sure what else you need Nandub for tho =\

thansk for advice. will try mpeg2dec.
long time user of xmpeg since it always ripped straight from disk,and bever understood how a program could really be that inferior(other than stability) considering the codecs do all the real work.Xmpeg was one the first to offer 2 pass and no need for ripping.
Always had a hell of a time with resize and crop with dvd2avi
Thanks Koepi

Well, you get used to cropping+resizing. There are a few standard resize resolutions (640x272, 640x352, 640x320,...) depending on the aspect ratio of the movie.
After all, it's not that bad, and sometimes the mpeg2 files are bad transfers with ringing lines at the bottom/top/sides which you can manually crop away and achieve a better compressability with (!).
The first trials take a little more time, I have to admit, but after that, you get simply better quality.
