View Full Version : SVCD, VCD& DivX burn speed question

What is considered to burn SVCD, VCD& DivX? I've been told not to burn any faster than 8x as I might lose a little video quality and if I were to burn max, my movie(s) might a produce a "wobbled" effect? I've been burning at 8x and have had no problems. What is considered "default" here and is SVCD, VCD& DivX considered "data" if I just wan't to make a backup of my "master" copies.

While burning speed is an issue for Audio CDs, I guess for Video discs this is nothing but a rumor. DivX discs (if not XCD) have full data error correction, so you can burn at any speed you like. For SVCDs / VCDs the reduced MODE2/Form2 error correction is used. But there shouldn't be any burning speed issue either.

Personally I always burn my video discs at full speed (24x). Never had any problems.

bb,
Pardon my lack of intelligence here but I'm a little confused. You said DivX discs (after encoding) have full data error correction. Is this based on the software you use to burn or my burner or a combination of both? My question also applies to VCD& SVCD mode2/form2 as well. What software do you recommend to burn SVCD, VCD, and DivX? If I were to use CloneCD to make backups of my SVCD master copies, isn't it recommended to tick "read sub-q data& audio" as this is the best write mode possible as my writer supports.

Its based on the mode the CD burning program burns the CD in, for an .avi file (which will be burned in an ISO mode), you'll always burn with error correction built-in (there's nothing you can do not to burn in this mode, and its the exact reason why XCD was invented).

For VCD and SVCDs, I find the best results come from generating bin files of the discs and burning those, since CloneCD processes the disc at such a low level, if there are errors on the VCD/SVCD it may replicate these errors misinterpeting them as a copy protection.

int 21h,
Thanks for your speedy response and I understand. Would one recommend using VCDEasy to burn an encoded SVCD (MPEG) or Nero? Is there a setting on DVD2SVCD where I can just make bin& cue files for my movie rather than have 2-3 MPEG files and 2-3 bin& cue files?

Oh, I forgot to mention that I always use CDRWin on the master copies to generate BIN/CUE files, and when I encode a DVD to SVCD, I use VCDEasy on the MPG files, generating BIN/CUE files, which I then also burn with CDRWin.

Nero used to have issues with bin/cue files, those have since been fixed, or so they say, I still just use CDRWin (which seems to work the best for this particular purpose).

All I have to add here is that I've been using Nero for a long time creating SVCDs from bin/cue files with no problem at all. I never encountered problems in creating SVCDs directly through Nero, either (dragging MPEG-2 files into Nero's SVCD layout and burning it).

I have an older Yamaha 8x burner, and I find that I get more successful SVCD burns at 4x than 8x. Chances are better than 95% that a 8x burn would be good, but I was getting slight video corruption every once and while. Since moving to 4x I have only encountered the problem once or maybe twice in over 100 burns. I use CDRWIN, but only out of habbit. I haven't tried burning bin/cues with nero.

I was thinking of upgrading my burner (or CPU or memory, I haven't decided yet), and being able to burn SVCDs at 24x or higher would be great since that is what 90% of my burns are. Can anyone recommend a burner known to burn S/VCDs at high speed?

My old 12x LiteOn burner is very trusty. Eats almost everything (different brands of CD-R(W)). My 24x Aopen is quite choosy, I don't think I'll buy an Aopen burner again. Although, if fed with the right brand, it works fine.

I don't believe it's very much a matter of what you intend to burn (that's a question of using the right software), but what kind of media you feed in.

I use Fuji CDRs. Some cheap CDRs (any made by CMC mag.) always contain errors when burning SVCDs at any speed, but burn data fine. I tried my brothers plextor (also 8x max speed) to burn some CMCs when I got stuck with 200 of them, but the results were the same.

I've used about 7 different types of media for burning SVCD, including Fuji and I've yet to encounter any problems except for the fact that some of the media I couldn't burn max mainly due to my "pickey" Plexy burner. I mainly use Nero to burn my SVCD's (MPEG) and have tested VCDEasy and I find the video quality the same. I've yet to try bin& cue because I don't know if there is any option on the latest DVD2SVCD 1.1 build 1a to just creat bin& cue files rather than MPEG& bin& cue. I partitioned my hd for 15 gigs just for SVCD encoding and have run out of hd space on some long movies. If I were to burn bin& cue I would go with either FireBurner or BurnAtOnce. If any member knows how to just create bin& cue and NOT MPEG files for DVD2SVCD, please post on how to do so.

@wmansir,
By chance did you play the entire movie before you burned to see if it was an encoding problem? I have a few that have "glitches" and I'm persuaded there was a scratch on the DVD, not so much a burning issue?

yeah, I always double check the bin/cue before attempting to burn a second copy. I sometimes make authoring errors so I usually load the image in deamon tools virutalCD and check the SVCD with WinDVD or PowerDVD.

Some recent idiot mistakes:

1. Put the wrong soundtrack on a movie, and not just something easy like the movie's spanish track, but a track from a completely different movie, including the commentary track from the wrong movie. Luckily, I caught this before burning.

2. Accidently encoded a movie at 480X470 instead of 480X480. I burned this and Apex player actually played it, kind of.

wmansir,
So there is NO option on DVD2SVCD just to encode to bin& cue only?(NOT MPEG). You can use Alcohol120% to emulate any image to virtual drive and this program is considered tops for cd/ audio protected cd's. If you need "assistance" with this program, feel free to email me

sorry, I don't use DVD2SVCD (only tried it once).
