What is your application, and with that there is still not always a better format to use. .sub are subs from a DVD made by vobsub. They are actually very lowcolor depth bitmaps used by DVD players to overlay subtitles. and vobsub takes the bitmaps and combins them into one file usually a .sub and .idx for the timing sceme. And frankly I've never heard of .str, I'm assuming you meant .srt. .srt is the most basic form of subtitles. Its jsut text and a time, and is the defualt output format for subrip and used for .ogm (ogg/vorbis containers) for switchable subtitles.

.sub/.idx are bitmaps, just pictures of the words used by vobsub to insert the subtitles directly how they look from the DVD to your .avi or mpg, whereas .srt is a script with the actual words. If you want the subtiels how they look from the DVD without any mistakes use vobsub. If you want to do it from a script using a certain size/font, you will need to rip them from the DVD using subrip, but you will have to edit the script to make sure the words are spelled correctly because subrip looks at the bmps on the DVD and determins the words using OCR(optical character regcognition, like scanners).

Hopefully this will tell you in breif the difference and help you decide what you want. Personally I use vobsub because I don't want misspelled subtitles, and the subtitles ont he DVD are fine looking for me
