View Full Version : Size of CDs not the same

I recently made a copy of a DVD that was 157 minutes long. My DVD player cannot take SVCD so I opted to make it VCD instead. For this reason, I was able to capture this movie in two CDs getting about 1130 bitrate. In the bitrate tab, I select 800 as my size and set the second entry to use 80-160 CD 2 which will guarantee that my DVD will fit on two CDs. After the entire process, I noticed that the first bin file was around 830MB or so and 780MB for the second one. When I proceeded to burn the first one on Nero, it said that the file size is too big. I was able to burn the second though. I searched through the archives for the key word "size too big" and found many posts. There were two things I learned from previous posts. One is to set the CD overlap seconds to two seconds or so. Since I'm running dvd2svcd 1.0.9 b3, its already filled out and I cannot change the value. Another thing it told me to do was to change the cd size from 800 to something like 795 or 790. When I did this, it did the trick and the burn was successful. But the question I have is this: why can't dvd2svcd use some of the left over bytes in the second CD to cover the extra bytes from the first CD? I would think that the program would be smart enough to make the CDs the same size or not waste any bytes and thus I wouldn't have to set the CD size to have a lower value. Here is a copy of my log file just in case.

Thanks,
krajy

That's because compliant VCD's has a fixed CBR value of 1150. Therefore the amount of bytes will vary depending on the length of the movie.

This makes sense because in this situation, I set a 157min DVD to take 1-80 1 CD 1129 rate, 80-160 2 CD 1129 for the bitrate tabs and if I had changed it to 1-79, 79-157, it would have been a bit more balanced (audio was 224 for this rip). But then my next question is, when doing CBR, how do we know what to set the bitrate tabs at to be able to fit in a 800 MB CD? If this movie was let's say 161 minutes and I wanted to squeeze it into 2 CDs, I would have set it 1-80, 80-161 and found that both CDs would not have fit. Do we need to manually calculate the size and figure out if it will fit in there or not?

You keep thinking that the bitrate tab builds. It does not. The only relevent section on the bitrate tab for a 157 minute movie is the section that 157 falls in between. All other sections are ignored. You set a section to be 80-160. This is the only section that is used.

Why you do this is beyond me. The default settings work for me most times. Under default a 157 minute movie would use the 5th section down and all others are ignored.

I thought you had this figured out?

No I understand the bitrate tab now. Its just that I realized my DVD playerd does not take SVCD so I need to create VCD which means everything is 1150 rate and CBR. Because of that, I again changed the bitrate tabs (since you'll be able to fit more minutes at 1150) and thus a bit more confusion ensued since I didn't really know the meaning of CBR vs. VBR. I know got it.

Thanks,
