I've just looked at the doom9 guide how to convert dvd-9 to dvd-5 and I like to know do you really need DVD Maestro? I mean, it's just a simple task. Is there any other program which do the same thing? DVD Maestro is pretty rare and hard to get hold of!

madcat_ninjamaster,

Sceanarist will also do, as will Spruce Up (Spruce Up no longer sold, but do a search).

You can use whatever you like to author with. The guide just tells you how to specifically do things in Maestro. Just don't come crying to me saying the guide doesn't work if you're using another piece of software and you don't understand how to use it right. hehe ;)

Since those DVD authoring software mention in the guild are pretty hard to get hold of, I was thinking if I wish to convert dvd-9 to dvd-5, do I really need this pacific software.

There are many DVD authoring software and if all the DVD authoring software will do the same job, then I have nothing to worry about as long the quality are high and good.:D

madcat_ninjamaster,

If you are going to look around the market for authoring software, make sure what you choose supports importing ac3 audio files. This is the best highly compressed audio file format.

If the software only supports wav files, you'll waste half your DVD disc space on the audio.

What about ifoedit 0.95 if you don't worry about ANY extra's? Just reencode with tmpg/cce and author with ifoedit: i think that's easiest.

Actually there is no reason why you couldn't use IFOEDIT's authored output for the DVD-9 to DVD-5 conversion. You may need to be careful about the fact that it uses CELLS to create chapters, though, since in many DVDs there can be multiple CELLS in a single chapter.

jdobbs,

Do I need to involve sorting out Cells to create chapters?

I was thinking of using Cyberlink PowerDirector. Any suggestion?
I'll try IFOEDIT as well since I think this program is getting popular.

You may need to wait a little until the bugs get ironed out if you're using NTSC and IFOEDIT. See this link (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=37663&goto=newpost). It's close, though.

I'm not familiar with Powerdirector. I generally use DVDMaestro, ReelDVD, or SpruceUp. As HomerJ mentioned, if the product doesn't support AC3 it's really not useful. DVD standards require either an AC3 or a PCM soundtrack (at least on NTSC, and suggested for PAL as well) -- and PCM takes way too much space.
