View Full Version : Jumbo SVCDs possible?

I read a similar post in here, but either it wasn't answered the way I needed it to be, or it wasn't exactly the same question. So here goes my version:
I bought a Mintek DVD-1600 player from Best Buy (for only $60!!!) and it plays absolutely everything. I love this player! Anyway, I was wondering if I could make a Super VCD, exect load it up and burn it onto a DVD (yes, I have a burner). In other words, make a 4.7GB SVCD. I have plenty of source material to test with, and can use Nero to make a super-sized SVCD, but of course it complains that the image is too big, and when I tried to burn using DVD media, it said I was using incorrect media for a SVCD.
So, is there a way to go thru the whole import/menu process in Nero for a SVCD, then make a disc image (ISO, BIN/CUE, whatever) and then merely use Nero again to write that out to a DVD? Or is there a simpler way? Any help would be appreciated!

You questions are discussed very, very recently in this and the same forum:

Read the contributions of htc10825 and ronnylov, if you feel something still not clear, than post it hier(again).

That was the similar post I was referring to that confused me. By the end there were too many people saying "no, what he really meant was" and I just gave up trying to figure it out.
Since I'm not worried about universal standalone compatibility, and not interested in making the current VCDs DVD-compliant, I just want to make a very large VCD, but no software I know of will burn it. Usually, VCDs can't be more than 800MB, so VCD software doesn't burn to DVDs. And DVD software won't accept VCDs.
So, is there some way to trick any software into burned 4GB of VCDs onto 1 DVD?

Just make a compliant DVD. The DVD standard supports half D1 resolution, 352x480/576, which is very close to what the SVCD standard uses. Or if you want to essentially make a VCD on dvd media then simply encode at 352x240/288 and mpeg1, which is also supported in the DVD standard.
There is no need to make a "Svcd or vcd on DVD media" because both formats are essentially already emcompassed in the DVD standard itself.

What I am shooting for is extra long SVCD creation because I don't have an DVD authoring software. So, this needs to be SVCDs on DVD media.

Get IfoEdit 0.95. Now it can author DVDs and is free.
I have an idea, but never tried, have small HD, no DVD burner. Therefore, I don't know if it works, most probably not. You can experiment with this, if you want. The idea is to rename your SVCD files .vob and to make .ifo files and image with IfoEdit and burn it with DVD Decripter. Well, I don't know...

It is not possible to make an SVCD on DVD media. CD and DVD media are physically different which means that the type of burning you use on a SVCD is not compatible with a DVD disc.
You must author it as a DVD. Try the latest IFOEdit.
It's a free program that can author a simple DVD.
Check out the IfoEdit guide and the format conversion guides.

I've posted the answer and solution of such things 2 weeks ago! see:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36794Generally a DVD use another file sytem than a CD. I doubt if you can burd the "mode 2 - form 2" sectors, which (s)vcd use, on a dvd! No knowing dvd autoring/burning software support that.
If you burn only the the mpeg2 file onto dvd without the svcd typical disk structure but with the dvd typical "UDF" format, you have just made a "dvd-r with mpeg2 system streams". It is not a "extra large SVCDs"! The OS will treat it like a dvd-rom, not svcd, nor dvd. It will not be played by WinDVD/PDVD in disk mode. In file mode (that can be played) you'll not have the svcd typical feathers like 2 stereo audio tracks(or up to 4 mono) and switchable subtitles. Also the menu/chapters are not available That means:
1. (S)VCD and DVD are logically different in organization(=diff. file system): (S)VCD use one ISO9660 track + "Mode2-Form2"-track(s), DVD use "UDF" file system. It is not possible to burn the (S)VCD file sytem to DVD and that will be recgnized by operation system. Only point out that CD and DVD are physically diff. is not enough as this is obvious.
2. You can DO burn extra large (S)VCD-files(up to 4.7GB) on DVD-R/+RW and play them in Mediaplayer or WinDVD/PowerDVD(in file mode) by using DVD-filesystem(=UDF) just like some DVD-Encyclopedia.
The advantages: the (S)VCD-files dont need to be re-encoded(for DVD compliant). No DVD authoring software are needed.
The disadvantages: the restriction I've mentioned in above post.
You see, all that I've pointed out 2 weeks ago.
I have a favour to ask of you: read the prev. posts carefully, if you still not understand, then post your questions after my posts. Dont start a new thread to irritate others.
