Learned Colleagues:

I've been a happy camper the last few weeks using the basics in the DVD-9 to DVD-5 "Full Copy" guide and backing up away to my heart's content. Life has been very good, until now! I just came up against my first interlaced movie, ST The Motion Picture. I've got all the IVTC info from the guides and forum and it seems to be a very complex process that may or may not yield meaningful results, since people report the necessity of balancing between jerkiness and quality.

My question is very simple...with the low price of DVD-Rs is it worth it to go through all these hassles just to compress the video onto a single DVD or is the "easy way" of dumping it onto 2 DVD-Rs the right way to go in this instance? It doesn't bother me to get up and change discs...always a good time to hit the head and stretch before returning to the comfy chair.

If IVTC is the way to go, is there a single, simple explanation on how to do it and what's the best vehicle, Gordian Knot or whatever?

To whomever answers, may your life be coasterless!!

A minor point -- your movie is probably telecined, not 'interlaced' per se.

http://www.doom9.org/ivtc-tut.htm

If you have any questions post them here.

After reading that, you might end up doing something like this in your avisynth script:

Telecide()
Decimate()

It's usually that simple.

If you're in NTSC region:

Telecide(guide=1)
Decimate()
