I am getting artifacts when capturing DV video in Adobe Premiere 6.0 and 6.5 from my Canon MV20i DV camera. The artifacts consists of frames with small squares as you see in the attachment. Those artifacts last 3-6 frames every 30 seconds or so. I have a dual PIII 1 GHz, SCSI drives and 1 GB RAM. I am using Win 2000 SP2 with all the DV updates. No antivirus running during capture. Help is welcomed.

Try Microsoft DirectX 8.1:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/downloads/drx81.asp
or Video Capture Update for DirectX 8.0:

I've got the same artefacts when capturing with Scenalyser Live. I alrzeady have Directx 8.1 and all patches required.
I happen to have a Canon Mini DV too, a MV 400i. Could this be related to the camcorder itself (kind of a wrong way of dealing with Firewire protocol) ?
Any other experience will be appreciated.

Try use another camcorder or use your camcorder with other PC.
If either way works, you'll know the problem.

My mobo is an Asus VP6. I have installed all Microsoft DirectX updates, including the DV capture one. I am getting another camera (Sony, this time), so in a few days I will see if it was the camera or my computer.

ahh, VIA chipset, that explains the errors.

there was a table listing motherboards that are know to cause problems with pinnacle Studio DV (TI 1394 chipset), and it said all VIA chipsets, this util sets the PCI bus to optimum for the studio DV and also the DC30, and should be fine for all via chipsets with DV cards, if unsure, set a restore point, altho its only going to work like WPCredit, and can be uninstalled easily.

Enf,
Thanks for the info. I installed Pinnacle PCI Performance Enhancer and still got artifacts and my computer got very unstable :(
I have tried with a Sony DCR TRV30E but could not get it to work :(
I guess I will have to set a new computer for DV capturing. Any mobo and DV card recommendation?
Thnks... Great forum by the way...

I see this kind of artifact when I try to capture footage shot in Canon's ELP/ESP.
The camcorder I use is a Canon MV4i, and it has these special extended modes that allow you to record 2x (ESP) or 3x (ELP) longer. It seemed like a good idea at the time, until I found out that it's impossible (as far as I know) to capture these modes. [If anyone knows a way to capture ESP/ELP, please tell me, you'd really make my day!]

DIggedy, what mobo and capture card are you using?
I donīt use the extended play option of the DV camera to avoid compatibility problems when transfering it to the computer.

id suggest you try your problems out on a friends mobo, just to make sure, and try to find a friend who doesnt have a via chipset mobo ;)
and recomendations: get a non-via mobo, and bascially any firewire card should do.
one other thing while i remember, check the PCI slot assignments (if you havent already) and make sure you give the DV card a PCI slot that doesnt share resources with anything.

Hi,
The problems you are facing were also faced by me but not to this extent. I had just one artifact on my DV video which I don't want to have.
I have a Canon GL1 miniDV camocorder and the fix I did is get a Sony head cleaning miniDV cassette, run it for 10 secs and then capture again.
Voila...This time I didn't get a single artifact or a single dropped frame.
Hope this might help.

Using a cleaning tape worked for me with a JVC which produced similar artifacts. However, I could also see the artifacts on the camcorder's monitor, so I knew it wasn't a firewire problem. Haven't experienced it with my Sony.
