Hi everyone. Thanx up front for taking yor time looking at this.
I'm currently encoding a few Jap anime series. I'm not including all the chapters in the DVD just episodes(but unbroken eg chapter 3 - 9).
i'm using smartripper and vobsub and it gets the subs out fine BUT the timing inside are incorrect they are timed such that it includes all the chapters before the current one so instead of staring at 0:0:20.500 is would start at 0:02:5.230 where the 2 minutes is the opening.
At the moment using vobsub cutter to cut the extra time but have to manually work it out and need to keep testing to guess the sync.

Does any1 know a way so when i rip the subs they are automatically set to the beginning rather than including the chapters b4???
btw i did Slayers and that;s the only anime DVD i know that works out fine so when i rip chapter 5 on it's own the sub will start from 0 and in sync. ?!?

thanx

Make a subtation alpha script, and there choose to shift the timings, ,and crop away all the extra time so the first line is right for the first dialogue in the episode.

As an avid anime fan... and out of curiousity... what series are ya doing ?

thanx for the reply.

So there is no way of doing it upon ripping??? So no matter what i have to do it manually? you see I was doing Slayers - Try and it worked by itself, that is i could rip chapters in between and the subtitles would be correct. but oh well then...

um i'm doing a few anime series atm some i finished some still in progress mainly all Slayers series and a few others her and there like Gasaraki and Lain. My friend got them from HK, even tho they are original release i must say anime DVD's are bloody hard to master : )
they have all sorts of problems, differnt one everytime.

seening that you are a fan got any recommendations?

Thanx again.

You have to do it manually. It isn't that hard.

Reccomendations for what ? If you mean anime... then Utena and Read or Die are AWESOME. I'm making fansub DVD-R's of ROD... in case you wondering.

yeh it's not hard at all but becomes a problem when you've got 20+ eps to do per anime :) well all good.

thanx for the recomm, i'll look them up. DVD-R ay cool...thing's not too cheap here so gotta wait for it to come down

I recommend the US release of FLCL. They have a kick-ass video quality :)

Another trick you can do is when you open DVD2AvI if you use this method is move the slider to the beginning of your vob files you will see a timestamp (Edit: if you have the preview info opened). this is the time that you need to remove from the subtitles. I have this problem with some animes i do all the time. Also if you want i have a modified version that shows all the way down to milisecs for this exact purpose..

thanx Schultz,

i've been doing just that : )
where can i get this modified version? cos i find it still not accurate have to do some testing to make sure but maybe it'll be better it displayed the microseconds too.

Thanx Tri, i've got FLCL weird anime, but dun think mine's US ver

When i get back to my home computer i can post it here for yea. Unless you can compile the program i can download it and modify the source and have you compile it. Also i belive why you are having luck with Slayers Try is because they actually don't have chapters in there Series.. they are 1 chapter per episodes thus your times are correct. I have already ripped that whole set.

thanx again Schultz.
I'll wait for your post then.
er slayers does have chapers. Each ep is split into 2 chapters you know how in the middle they have the break bit for commercials? that's where the split is. hmm i can't seem to work out why slayers is different apart fro it's old and the new way they are doing it results in having to chop bits off. ???!!!

So you modified it yourself ay. cool!

Are they? its been a while since i did them.. But why you are getting wrong times is basically the vobid/cellid changes generally when you go to a new episode the vobid changes and you start a new timestamp for the video time. While Cell id's don't change the time.. And your chapters inside the Episodes are just new Cell Id's which don't reset the time so they carry the first few cells times. That is why you have the 2 mins subs that you cut off.. And in Slayers your subs started from the VobID so it would get the right stuff.. if i remember right when gabest releases vobsub 2.19 this won't be a problem because he rewrote how the subs are ripped. But i should be able to post the file in 2-3 hours..

ah i see. eh i was thinking that the new vobsub might fix this. hope so.

ah i was another quick question. it's about hellsing, it's not technical. i just ripped the first few eps and realised that the sub for it is shocking, i mean it's a very bad translaion. it that normal? but i had a qick look at the later eps like on the 2nd disk and it seems better...wth?
is there somewhere i can download the subs from? cos mine is no help at all.

I am watching second disc of Hellsing right now.. I didn't think that the first translation was that bad. what are you comparing it to? or can you speak japanese.? If you are comparing it to the english dub then it would be the dub that is bad and not the subtitles. But i think if you search these forums some people have posted sites where you can download subs from..

Here is the modified dvd2avi that shows the miliseconds that you need to edit with. a mod will have to approved the attachment.

Unfortunatelly, there are not many anime scripts sites out there... fansub groups are not releasing their scripts (even with... say one year delay). I can send you Hellsing 5-13 SSA subs, but I bet that's all you'll find on the internet :(

Speaking of subtitles: I'd kill for vobsub rip of subtitles for I, My, Me! Strawberry Eggs. I saw the pioneer release and they really outdid themselves... but I don't really need to have TWO dvd sets of one series ^_^

Edit: vB apparently dislikes extended chars, hiragana killed

thanks for the post to dvd2avi. i'll give it a try.
as for hellsing, the subs for disk one is really bad. it seems to be a direct translation from japanese dialogue so the grammar is all wrong and most of the time doesn't make sense. for example, instead of "you are scared" they translate to "i scared" or some sh*t like that. if u have disk one would it be possible to send me the subs in vobsub format. i can send u an example of my sub.

thanks

Yusaku, can u send or post links to the subs u mentioned.

Here's an example of how f'ed my sub is:
My DVD sub - the quote from the anime

We are sent here, something ominous is happening, for the everlasting peace Amen

suppose to be -

In the name of god, impure souls of the living dead shall be banished into eternal damnation. Amen

wtf?!
