According to Hydrogenaudio (http://audio-illumination.org/forums/) MPC will go opensource in a few weeks! Great news! Xvid + MPC? :)

Xvid + MPC? :) naa.. MPC isn't tuned for low bitrates. although it could be a very good combination for live performance dvds and musicals.

MPC is tuned to be audibly lossless to most ears at bitrates exceeding roughly 160kbit/s. I don't believe much recent testing has been done to compare it to other codecs at lower bitrates, but at high bitrates, to sensitive ears, it's far and away superior.
I personally use MPC for my ripped music CDs. I don't think I'd ever use it for my DivX/XviD rips, though. I'm very satisfied with ogg vorbis --quality 4 for my 2 CD encodes.

Well, I don't think that this is going to change much in the Video scene. The decoder source has already been open for a long time and as DSPGuru said because it is tuned for higher bitrates it probably won't be used by very many for Videos other than ones where you want the best quality sound and are willing to spend bits for it. I don't see how opening the encoder source explicitly helps the video scene. For audibly transparent music though MPC is the best and is my format of choice.
And remember MPC's encoder becoming open source is still unofficial!

Curious. What are the implications of that?

The implications is that you will be able to decode MPC on a notepad (iPaq, Sharp Zaurus...). It wasn't possible with the official decoder, since it requires a FPU.

iRiver firmware might be introduced as well.

How easy is it to use custom firmware in these devices? If iRiver themselves don't want to do it, can we take it upon ourselves in the MPC community?

It's very difficult. Chances are, lots of players would be rendered unusable due to bad flashing (while the hacked firmware is being developed) before something usable (and not 100% safe) is made available.
Then, there are other concerns. If you flash your player with unofficial firmware, you lose all warranty.
Besides, it seems the tools available ATM for hacking - decompilers and compilers for the iRiver firmware - are very unstable and tend to generate corrupt binaries.

Roberto.
