View Full Version : Rip Failure - Can I salvage?

Hi,
I am new to ripping, and recently ripped Point Break using Smart Ripper although I guess I didn't have some of the settings correct as I didn't get an .M2V file all I got was this:
06/10/2002 03:39 491,205 vts_01.d2v
06/10/2002 03:39 539,514 vts_01.idx
06/10/2002 03:39 504 vts_01.lst
17/12/1999 20:18 69,632 vts_01_0.ifo
06/10/2002 03:20 1,061,158,912 vts_01_1.vob
07/10/2002 22:46 1,013,144 vts_01_1.vob.vinf
06/10/2002 03:24 1,061,842,944 vts_01_2.vob
06/10/2002 03:27 640,497,664 vts_01_3.vob
06/10/2002 03:30 1,062,453,248 vts_01_4.vob
06/10/2002 03:35 1,061,588,992 vts_01_5.vob
06/10/2002 03:39 793,653,248 vts_01_6.vob
I can play from disk using PowerDVD's play from disk and selecting the IFO although I don't know how I can salvage what I have from the above to re-encode using ReMPEG2 to fit on a single DVD-R. Basically I normally follow a procedure of SmartRipper, ReMPEG2, SpruceUP and Prassi to make by DVD 'backups', but in this instance I have been thrown off course by a faulty/failed rip.
Can anyone offer any suggestion as to how I can get back on course?

Rob

looks like you ripped the file structure instead of the streams...
try these steps:
- create a DVD in Nero with those files, write it to the Image Writer to create a .nrg file.
- use the nero imagedrive to mount it as a dvd drive
- use smartripper to extract it properly.

I'm not intimately familiar with Smartripper, but I believe you can have it open IFOs/VOBs directly from a folder (which would save you the step of making the image drive).

neither am i, i prefer dvddecrypter, which seems to only work from drives (or images mounted to drives).

Very many thanks for your reply although I do have a further query.
I am using Nero 5.5.9.9, have selected the Image Recorder, selected the files although I don't get the opportunity to burn? I also don't see how I can mount the .NRG file as a virtual drive from within Nero?
I would be grateful if you could advise.

As I say, skip all that. Instead, just:
-Take all DVDs out of your drives.
-Open Smartripper, ignore "No DVD" error
-Click the folder icon in the upper right hand corner
-browse to your folder with your vob/ifo files in it
Now, properly extract what you originally wanted into a DIFFERENT folder.

Dear FamousPerson,
Thank you for your patience with this, however.
I am using SmartRipper, I select navigate to the folder, SmartRipper is obviously seeing content in the folder as the OK button becomes available. I select this folder although it says 'no DVD found'.
A guess is that it is due to my VIDEO_TS.IFO being missing, I only have VTS_01_0.IFO? Purely a guess, I am still learning as I go...
I have even tried to use IFOEDIT previously to recreate the VIDEO_TS.IFO file although I wasn't successful, probably cause I wasn't exactly sure what I was doing.
Any ideas?

Rob

Yes, I bet the missing VIDEO_TS.IFO is the problem.
If I were you, I would use IFOEdit to open vts_01.ifo, then click the VOB extras button to extract the movie only. You may need to read the IFOEdit guide to do this.
Anyway, make sure you extract to a new directory. IFOEdit will then create an entirely new "DVD" for you in that folder, which you can open with Smartripper and demux.

You can extract "m2v" directly from vobs file using "Vstrip".
You can download it here at doom9's...

I haven't had any luck with mounting a DVD image, so given up on that, tried using IFOEDIT to recreate the IFO's, that appears to go through the motions but doesn't actually do anything.
I like the idea of VStrip although again that doesn't do anything. Not specifying anything on the first tab (Input), on IFO tab selecting the VTS_01_0.IFO and shows data about the film.
On output tab, specify the filename pointbreak.m2v etc, remove macro, click run but nothing happens, tried selecting demux, streams etc, doesn't do anything at all, sorry about this, but I am stuck again.

if you want an m2v file, use DVD2AVI and open first vob, when it selects all vobs click ok...
then save project that will give you a d2v file you can load into tmpg and then transcode to m2v...

A quick question in reply to the above.
Won't all these conversions affect the quality at the end of day, I wanted to do it in a few steps as possible.
Additionally, normally with SmartRipper I end up with an M2V and an AC3 file, will I have to do the audio streams separately or will they be combined in the M2V file?
As I mentioned my strict procedure is normally SmartRipper, ReMPEG, Spruce & Prassi, being thrown off course like this has really scuppered my rip :-(

If you only want the .M2V files, you can use TMPG to DEMUX the elementry streams using FILES > MPEG TOOLS > DEMULTIPLEX (not SIMPLE DEMUX) and click on the stream that you want to parse (the video stream). This will give you one .M2V file for each one of your .VOBs. You can combine them into one large file with the MERGE/CUT option in the above tool set. IFOEdit needs your .IFO files to find the info that it needs to demux. This method does not.

Deak SLK001,
This was going very very well until I tried to merge them.
I used the demultiplex option for each of my VOBS, creating both a video (.m2v) and an audio (.ac3) file. So I ended up with vts_01_1 and vts_01_2 etc for each of my vobs.
I then clicked on the far right tab for Merge/Cut added my .m2v file although only the first one was valid, the others came up with the error 'illegal MPEG video stream'.
Out of all the suggestions so far, I considered this the best due to its simplicity, and it gets me back on track and used to what I am working with, i.e. .M2V and .AC3 files which I can then re-encode in ReMpeg2.
I've been through the motions again so I know I did everything as you instructed, but I am not sure what has gone wrong. Any ideas?
Many thanks.

Demuxing each file should give you:
VOB1.M2V
VOB1.AC3
VOB2.M2V
VOB2.AC3
VOB3.M2V
VOB3.AC3
and so on, until you get to the end of your .VOBs.
Open MERGE/CUT and ADD:
VOB1.M2V
VOB2.M2V
VOB3.M2V
etc.
Name the file REMERGED.M2V and hit RUN. You SHOULD get one large .M2V file.
The .AC3 files can't be merged like this by TMPG (in my experience), so you will have to convert them to .WAV files, the call up some audio editor and combine them into one large .WAV file. You will then need to convert back to .AC3 using BESWEET.
I don't know why you are getting "INVALID MPEG FILE" errors. Perhaps the time indexes aren't being reset to zero index, or maybe the header isn't being constructed. I don't know if this will work, but try this:
1) Load the "bad MPEG" into MERGE/CUT.
2) Save file as NEWVOB2.M2V.
3) Run
Hopefully, TMPG will think that you want to cut from this file, and it will properly reconstruct the header.

(why decoding+merging wave files?)

I wasn't aware that BeSweet had the capabilities to merge .AC3 files. Of course, this method would be far easier.
