View Full Version : Is there a way to lessen CPU Usage(100%) by CCE-SP2.50

It seems though CCE-SP 2.50 crashes quite often on my pc. I have noticed when it does, it is using 100% CPU, according to Task Mon. I am using WinXP Pro, with P4 2.0Ghz(no-overclock) 512 MB DDRAM. I have changed setting in DVD2SVCD to idle time only, but HD lite is busy busy busy and computer is quite unresponsive. How can I slow the encoding speed down slightly to geet more stable results. I have one movie in fact I cannot get past 88% no matter what I try. When it crashes, its always during encode. It does work most of time but like I say, Computer CPU is tied up completely. Please help.

in task manager, right click on CCE and set priority to Low
that way it will only use the idle time, but if you leave the computer its still going to use 100% ;)
you might have to turn your memory timings down a little to stop it crashing.

Turn memory timings down???
What causes CCE to use 100% of a 2.0 GHZ Processor? Is it internal to CCE or is it in DVD2SVCD?
I dont understand what memory 'timings' you are reffering to, sorry.

This really isn't the forum for this kind of discussion.
ANY program will use 100% of CPU regardless of CPU size if the program needs it. CCE needs as much CPU as it can get until it is done encoding. If you had a 100Ghz processor CCE would use all of it.
To modify that setting and allow other programs to run you can change the 'Priority' setting (Windows NT/2000/XP only)
To do this press ctrl - shift - esc (at the same time). This will bring up task manager. Find the CCE process by name, right-click it. Choose 'Set Priority' then either 'Below Normal' or 'Low'. CCE will now only use the CPU when other tasks are not trying to use it. I have found that setting CCE to 'Below Normal' allows good rate but I can still surf, word process, etc without noticable slow down of the other applications.
If you need more info on this I suggest some research on Priorities at support.microsoft.com
As for Memory timings I believe auenf is referring to the CAS/RAS Latency (Column access strobe/Row Access Strobe) specifications of the actual DIMM chips in your PC. Quality chips can have a CAS of 2 or 3 while cheaper ones will be higher and need longer to read/write to memory. Since these can be fairly advanced settings your best bet is to let the BIOS configure it by using either the 'System Default' or 'Optimal performance' settings in your BIOS. This may not give you the best performance but will be stable until you aquire more information about BIOS/Memory issues. For this I would suggest tomshardware.com as one of many starting places.
Good luck

Thanks JSmooth, will check out tomsharware. If anyone else has had this problem, wih CCE crashing out sometime and found a good solution that would help not only me but others as well, I am requesting that you please share it.
I always do a search before I post a question to keep the mods happy and boards (somewhat) uncluttered. I found that someone had more stable results after installing XP Pro Service Pack 1. Hopefully this will help as I am downloading it now with my "blazing" 38k connection. Be aware that if your product key starts with FCKGW- then you will not beable to install service pack. May I suggest mwright.plus.c** for instruction how to change your key - They also have utility to check your key. please note this is not a site that gives serials - just how to change it in case yours dont work like mine didnt.
Well good luck to all and sorry for long post but thought someone else may want to try SP1 if they too are having problems.
Any more suggestions are welcome for all of us still using CCESP250.

thats a better site for changing the XP 'corp' (Volume License Kit) key.
as for you problem, yes i meant ram timings in the bios, altho i say it like i did so people who dont know what to change an what not to change wont come back yelling at me that i made their computer worse ;)
other thing i noticed was you are using XP Pro and CCE 2.50, where 2.62 and higher officially work in XP, and ive seen here that 2.50 can crash randomly on 2.5, where 2.6x doesnt.
if you can, upgrade to 2.64 or 2.66 and you should be fine.

I updated my corporate key (sucessfully)as stated at the site I listed. Directions were straightforward and no need to reinstall XP.
I then was able to update to ServicePack 1 sucessfully, which was a 3 hour download for me.
All seems ok now.
I have been considering upgrading to a later version of CCE. I have had mostly good result with 2.50 except crash periodically. I have been kind of wary of upgrading to the 2.62-2.64-or 2.66 vesions bcause of posts on this board.
I am running XP Pro 512MB DDRAM, 2.0GHZ Pentium4 Gigabyte Mobo, so I am wanting any suggestions as to which version I should upgrade to and what advantages it would have over 250SP. Will I have to dl any other softwares to go along with it or will all other softwares I been using with 250 work.
I know where to get 2.66 and 2.66 beta, and 2.62 and the crc fixes for these but dont know about 2.64.
What would you all recommend for my setup here and what is advantage of newer versions, i.e.-speed, stability, quality(most important)
Thanks for any information and recommendations. As I stated before I have searched and everyone has mixed feelings about upgrading from 2.50 so I am just wondering what I have to lose and/or gain.

ok, your running a P4, and the 2.66 seems to have a bit of a performance increase, as a couple of threads have been mentioning, and also the latest build of 2.66 might support avs files natively, but i dont use avs->cce at all, i remember seeing it in a thread somewhere, cant remember which one exactly tho.
but basically, you really need to find a version that will support avs, otherwise you are going to have to use vfapi or link2, neither of which i use either ;)

I have a P4 2.0GHz; 512MB DDRAM, runs 2K.
I though when I update my P4, it would allows me to do other things while transcoding, but guess what's... It does not, although the encode process done much quicker...
Here is what I did. My system is fabulous
Boot up from IDE (20GB) 7200RPM <-- System HDD.
I rip, encode, remux on my 120GB, 7200rpm HDD use as Internal FireWire HDD, just connect Internal FireWire Convertor into this baby (www.caloptic.com/fwint.html).
No more sluggish, even my CPU goes up to 100%, I can still do multi-task, no more crashing.
Hope this would help.

The Reason CCE crashes is that it s REALLY too sensitive with corrupted data or even the slightest problem of a HDD.Run CheckDisk and the Defragment and then i m sure it ll stop crashing...
It had happenned to me a lot of times in the past and chkdsk changed ti all for the better...
Hope this helps...
