So you want a backup of your DVDs? you'll have to pick a compression format for your video first: DivX or XviD. then you'll need to pick an audio compression format: MP3, AC3, Vorbis. look around the site, read up on everything, browse through the forums. the simplest tool to do all of this ~~~>Gordian Knot.

Since your asking for second opinions: Gordian Knot is the easiest program to use to reach your goal. Doom9 has an excellent guide on it, just look under guides on the main page.
