My monitor has been getting darker and darker over the last hour. I've now got the brightness and contrast pushed all the way up, but it still continues to get dimmer.

I guesstimate it'll be 30 minutes or so until it's totally black at this rate.

Any ideas?

Well it's not looking good - I've upped the nVidia gamma and brightness controls as far as they'll go and it's still only just visible. Guess I won't be around much until I find a new monitor.

Alas, that's the usual story. Unfortunately I have to be the one to report the death of a beloved family member, the monitor :D

However, they usually don't die out with such a rapid pace, it should take weeks for them to black out completely. Are you sure your display adapter isn't dying? Cathode ray tube is somewhat chaotical by nature, one can never accurately predict how will they die or how long will they live.

You could view this as a new beginning; get a good 19" Samsung monitor (with 3 year on-site warranty) for incrediably low price, watch the crystal clear image for a while and Enjoy Life again :P

It does appear to be slow as you say - this morning it was nice and bright, but has gotten darker and darker as the day has gone on.

I suppose I'll use this advanced notice to get a new one! Pity there aren't any cheap second-hand shops around here, I got this 17" gateway model for $30 and it worked a treat until now.

Maybe you still could get a stroke of luck. Let the monitor sleep overnight, it might look better after ~8 hours of inactivity. Who knows, it even might work perfectly ever after!

Besides that there is not much you can do unless you want to tamper with the control circuitry (the capacitors can nest >5000 volts weeks after unplugging the cable) inside the monitor :D
