View Full Version : To CBR Or ABR: That Is The Question

I've been made aware that using vbr/abr mp3 streams within the .avi container is a gross hack. What I'm wondering now is exactly what does that imply. Does that imply that these resulting .avi's probably won't play on hardware (i.e., non-computer) divx players?

Another question. Suppose I use cbr mp3s, but use nandub to multiplex/mux. Does nandub still use the vbr/abr gross hacks to mux any kind of mp3 to the .avi? Can I avoid this question altogether by using VirtualDub for muxing purposes, so long as my audio is CBR?

Thank you for your opinions.

It is said that AVI with VBR MP3 isn't standard, so it probably won't work on standalone divx players, if they ever come to the market! (which I don't believe IMHO! the best solution remains the TV-enabled PC!)

I guess NanDub will produce non standard AVIs even if you mux "normal" CBR MP3.

You can of course use VirtualDub to mux your CBR MP3 after having patching it with WaveMP3. Those AVI will be standard.

i wouldn't count on stand-alone divx players, and would go for VBR.
and if there wiLl be a divx player, one day, they would have to support this VBR form, or no-one would buy it.

an interesting question, though, as always ;).
