This is my try to develop an ac3 realtime encode filter, maybe usefull to send ogg 5.1 stream to an external ac3 decoder (even other uses ;P)
I'm using ffmpeg ac3 encoding engine, but I have some problems on dshow stuff.
For now only works with an uncompressed input and still have some buffer alignment issues, I've made the project publically avaiable.
Take a look at this url:
http://oss.netfarm.it/
There are (and will be more) also other projects, since this is opensource section of my Company.
Hope someone helps me with the filter. Hope also many peoples will take advantage from all stuff released (more will come).

try to have a demo from the nforce (1 or 2) APU from nvidia
very impressive thing:

i heard the miracle the realtime dolby encoder in the nforce chipset
it is VERY impressive
more than only giving 5.1 to a simple stereo (or even mono)
it smouth the sound !
i mean a very crappy sound coming from a video
they put it through the DD output
and the sound became suddenly nearly as a CD !!!
just because of the conversion and the filter used by the chip
very very impressive thing
