Manono, jggimi and myself has written a article called
'Force Film, IVTC, and Deinterlacing - what is DVD2AVI trying to tell you and what can you do about it?' (http://www.doom9.org/ivtc-tut.htm)
This was partly based on my vocabulary in the old sticky here in the DVD2AVI forum, but hs been expanded (a lot) by jggimi and manono.
Hopefully this will answer most of the common questions like:
When shall I use force film and when shall I do a manual IVTC?
When shall I deinterlace?
What is telecining?
Is there a difference in how NTSC and PAL should be treated?
There is also a list of useful links.
