Hi everybody,
I just upgraded from WIN98SE to XP pro but the hard disk is quite slower and consumes larger CPU resource. How may I regain the HD DMA mode that was configured under win98se ?. Its an old Socket7 Amd processor with 128MRam Seagate 20GB, Chipset SiS on a M571 motherboard. The SiS IDE PCI interface is the XP default driver with switch DMA mode proposed if available, but selected mode is PIO only. It is just like if XP were incompatible with this material. I tried to find a specific driver for SiS5598. Can anybody solve this ?
Many than,ks in advance.:(

Couple of quick searches on Google (www.google.com).

http://m571.com/m571/m571upgrade.htm

Do not use SiS IDE drivers! Use the Microsoft drivers provided with Win 95 OSR 2, Win 98, or a later OS. The Microsoft drivers will have a DMA box in the HDD Device Manager entry under settings (Win 9x/ME only), which should be checked. Windows 2000 is another matter, many users are still trying to get DMA working on this operating system.

Is the machine a Dell, Compaq, Gateway, Tiny.....etc?

WCPUID (http://www.h-oda.com) is a fine little app for finding out what exact chipset you have. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your answer, the motherboard is a PCChips M571, south chipset is Sis 5597, north is 5595, vga 5598/5597. Not a smart brand I know, its not mine, and with a K6-2 350 MHz it was a very bad idea to upgrade. But for me it was interesting to seen a windows XP and some new diffulties abroad. It seems that Pcchips (now ECS) has not provided a driver and will not on those old Socket7 series. So let use use the default XP driver, any idea how to force the atapi.sys driver to use dma mode if it doen't want to do so ?

http://www.sis.com/support/driver/utility.htm

SiS5513, 5571, 5581/5582, 5591, 5597/5598,5600 IDE Driver here. (http://driver2.sis.com/utility/ide/side213.exe)

SiS530/5595, SiS620/5595 IDE Driver here. (http://driver2.sis.com/utility/ide/uide102.exe)

Don't see WinXP listed so i don't think u will find them at all.
Not sure about forcing atapi.sys?!?!?!

Good luck

I solved similiar problem recently and solution was little bit odd.
I did a "cable work" it means i tried almost every combination of physical connection until i found one working. But i have via chipset which is ODD.
