Pioneer is probably getting tired of all the tech support calls from people that are using generic media and getting the usual crap media problems, pixalation, picture freezing, ect. so they are making their firmware updates so people can't burn generics anymore. The whole thing is a big conspiracy.

No idea...i haven't tested these crap media on 1.68.
When I used 1.68 or earlier ones (1.4x or the such), i used nothing but Verbatim media, of course without any coasters.
Now, crap media is cheap enough to test some of them :)

I've been using firmware 1.90 on my A03 with Ritek media for a few weeks now...no problems so far. (knock on wood).
I'm running WinXP
on a VIA KT133A chipset motherboard
latest 4in1 drivers (well latest since last month i haven't checked their site since then)

I've been using v1.9 Fw using Bulkpaq Gen 3 with no problems. I also have some unbranded Vivastar (smacked wrist) which used to burn O.K. so I'll try them out ASAP to see if they still work.
Happy Ripping.

Upgraded my dvr-a03 to 1.90 2 weeks ago.
Until now: 3 dvd-rw's, and around 11-12 (lost count) dvd-r's on Princo 2x media.
Random burns between Windows 2000 Advanced Server and Windows XP .NET Release Candidate 1.
Software: Prassi PrimoDVD 2.0.767, Nero 5.5.8.1 and 5.5.9.9, Stomp RecordNowMax 4.00
No problems.
