View Full Version : Can't get AC3 in AVI to play

Hello, I've got a (probably) simple question.

I have an AVI file with an AC3 audio stream and I cannot get the audio to play back. WMP7 attempts to download a codec, fails, then plays only the video stream. The Playa crashes, and PowerDivX Nextgen crashes. PowerDVD XP 4.0 plays the video but no audio.

I have a Sound Blaster Live 5.1 card, hooked into quad speakers. 'Decode 5.1' is set to on in the Creative surround mixer, and turning it off does nothing. PowerDVD XP can play regular DVD discs into the quad speakers perfectly fine. I'm using Windows XP Professional and DivX Pro 502 (although I'm guessing the video codec has nothing to do with it...). I also have NVDVD installed, which again plays regular discs just fine.

These are the file's paramaters (not my rip- I've made a few rips but always with MP3 audio, not AC3)

Codec: DivX;-) MPEG4 v3
Bitrate: 1284 Kbit/s
Width: 640
Height: 352
Fps: 23.98

[audio]
Codec: AC3-Digital
Bitrate: 438 Kbit/s (reported as 448 by window's properties dialogue)
Channels: 5 (surround)
Samplerate: 48,000 Hz

Any ideas how to get it to play back? Maybe I need to reinstall something? I have previously installed and removed the WinDVD 4 demo, could this be an issue? Thanks in advance.

Looks like I'm suffering the same problem.
I've plenty of experience doing DVD rips but am new to playing Divx and I hope you don't mind but I would also be interested in the solution to this one.

Have you read the Sticky: Ac3 Q&A (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18318) in the Audio Encoding? That post could help.

Downloaded and installed:

http://doom9.org/Soft21/Filters/audiofilters.zip

and now Windows Media Player 7 crashes when attempting to play the file as well. It doesn't try to download a CODEC anymore, tho.

About to try the other codecs (Tsumami's/Nimo's). Will report back with results.

Nimo's Lite Pack 1.0 works perfectly! Sound is back!

I downloaded and installed it from here:

http://www.btinternet.com/~nimosiro/ (click Lite pack at the top)

and then chose to put on everything in the audio codecs (except Ogg Vorbis). I also removed the video filter from installing because my DivX works fine.

Sound plays beautifully :)

Thanks for pointing me to that Q&A.

The audio filters from http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Filters/audiofilters.zip work okay for me with Windows Media Player 8.

You might want to try updating from WMP7 and see if that helps.

Stable ac3 filters are included in DivX Pro 5.02 which is available to download from my site:

I have DivX 502 pro already, and it was installed when the movie didn't work.
