Well, it's all in the subject. It's very irritating because it restarts my computer immidiately!!! (and i thought Windows 2000 never crashed)
I know i should play MPEG2 with DVD software, but mpeg1 and mpeg2 have the same extension -> .mpg and i do wanna play mpeg1 with mediaplayer.
Anyone any ideas how to solve this?

From MS Document on WMP File Formats Supported (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q245608&)
NOTE: MPEG 2 requires third party software or hardware decoders.
Hope this helps!

Could you be a bit more specific? What software decoder would that be?

dunno...
i've always just used PowerDVD to open MPG2's... never had WMP do it right. I dont work for MS, i just know how to search their website to find things...

Oh well, thx anyway.
It's kinda weird cause *i think* mpeg2 DID work on mediaplayer some time ago. :(

download and install freedvd.zip file from the download page.

& if you feel really adventurous try getting a copy of graphedit, load it up, click Render Media, load your MPEG-2 file & see what filters are put in the graph. (hopefully it wont crash unless you try & run (play) the graph)
That way you can see if any weird MPEG-2 splitter/decoder filters have been installed recently,
Good luck,
Cheers,

ps
@all:
Anyone ever had the problem of playing MPEG-2 files but when you goto press right mouse button on the picture then goto Properties it crashes Media Player? Its a weird one but its happened to me twice now :) (you can still goto the properties by going File->Properties  )

Ok, i installed the freedvd. But i think nothing is changed.
So i check it out with graphedit (i'm not to good at it). It seems that WinDVD is the cause of the problem. The graph looks like this (i hope it fits on the screen):
.mpg -> mpeg2 splitter -> Intervideo Video Decoder -> Overlay -> Video Renderer
-> Intervideo Audio Decoder -> Default Directsound Device
I guess the intervideo decoders should be replaced by the freedvd decoders somehow.

I removed WinDVD completely. According to graphedit video and video are now decoded by the fraunhofer decoders. Unfortunately WMP generates an error now.
There seems to be improvement because my computer doesn't crash anymore :p :(
