Ok Doom9, now you've done it
A long time already i have the policy of NEVER visiting a website again that blocks the use of the back button by redirecting to the same page again. This trick is not only high up on the annoyance list of me allone i think. And please, tell me what you expect to gain by using it! Really trust me: you only annoy ppl and nothing else.
Some sites use it te get more pagehits and do count everytime you're redirected back, which nicely doubles the ammount of hits at least. very cool... but i think your counter doesnt count then, so nothing gained there.
Let me ask politely:
Please, Doom9, give us back the back key! Its the key that will make us come back.

Really? It doesnt here.
Go to whatever website first
then go to the Doom9 site (http://www.doom9.org/)
Then hit the back key of your browser.
Here i get a refresh of the doom9 site.

Can't confirm that. Everything fine here, the "Back" key is working.

Strange....
I just tried again with several sites and from all of those i can go back to the previous ones.
But when i enter http://www.doom9.org/ i can't. Then i'm stuck there.
I dont think i'm dreaming.

Which browser do you use? Are you behind a proxy/firewall? Does it help to clear the history?

I've tried IE6SP1 and Mozilla 1.2b (latest daily build) and I cannnot verify the behaviour you reported (or should I say: accuse me of).
your counter doesnt count then, so nothing gained there. That is partially correct, hits are counted internally but what you'll get to see are unique visits and there you have a timeout before the same IP is being counted again.

hmmm strange...
I use IE, the latest version. (not sp1)
OS = winxp.
Just tried it again.
I visit some site (select it in my favs list)
Then i visit the doom9 site (http://www.doom9.org/) (same way)
And then i hit the arrow-left button on the top-left of my screen to bring up the previous page.
That doesnt work. I get stuck on the doom9 page and have to manually go from there to where i want to go.
This habit is particulary annoying when viewing sites found with a searchengine because it makes you loose the result-page. a work around is to open all hits in a new page, but its annoying.

I've got the same setup as you and I don't get that behaviour. The leftbutton does what it always have done...

Happens to me too, it's something in the javascript doing it. But, it's no big problem, use the pulldown (the skinny button next to "back" with a downward pointing triangle) to go to where you were 2 pages ago. Or you can rapidly hit Alt left-arrow twice.

Mozilla 1.2a - IE6 SP1 are working right, back button and key sequences to do "back", maybe the script for "redirect" to the main frameset when a page like /software.htm is called.
Often I have things like "page /software.htm cannot be found" (with Mozilla)

yesterday i upgraded to XP sp1 (dutch version). The problem is still there. But it seems the thing is not build in intentionally. I'm glad to hear that!

Have you edited your HOST file? maybe to block ad servers? this causes this problem as ad servers are pointed back to your computer and displays the same page you are on again. Also if you type in www.doom9.NET then this then redirects to doom9.ORG ...maybe this is what is happening? as you press the back button you are directed to the doom9.NET site which will then redirect you to doom9.ORG again ...and then you click back again and the same thing happens?

Yep!!
that was it! Great thinking!
I had a bookmark of doom9.net and i never noticed it redirected me to doom9.org.
So after saving the new bookmark (to .org) everything works fine!
Confusing though the bookmark is named "Doom9.net - The Definitive DVD Backup Resource".....
