a lot of work goes into the commercial dvd menus. some are better than others, LOTR extended is going to be one of those, hopefully.

i like the menus in Fight Club, the animation and feel of R1 city of angels, and some of the kids DVD menus, i.e disney stuff, toy story, bugs life are good.
Matrix, even though it's old in comparison.

x-men was snazzy, if you could get past the 6 minutes of ads on the R1 edition. it can be a real shame, FBI/future releases/company ads ruins most of these menus since you don't get into the dvd right away, and its distracting. just put paper ads in the plastic cases, where we will never really look at them.

some of them have glitches, like the harry potter pan&scan version on some dvd players. but other than that, i don't really watch the menus, or remember a lot of them. DVD/TV appliance stores would konw what impresses, and keeps people focusing on the screen, have a peek in an electrical goods store and see what DVD is on the screen at the time.

i still see MI2 , Titanic, Matrix on the local department store Plasma screens & whatever latest DVD is out.

Monsters Inc has a pretty elaborate menu system with doors and such :)

I love Lawrence of Arabia (R1). Elaborate images of riders, dust, clothes, superimposed. Hard to describe, but very good.

This is what i don't like about menus:
- The sound of many menus are way too loud compared to sound in the movie (many DVDs are like this. Yuck, horrible!).
- Menus which give the whole show away. (for example predator, you can actually see the face of predator in the menu. This should be a surprise untill the end of the movie, you morons!)
- Too much animation which slows down the whole thing.

So i guess i don't like most menus. I usually start the movie right away and then select the right sound/subs/chapter. :D
