Hi Everyone,

I am very new to this stuff and would like to know if there is a how to location for dvd to dvd guide and if so where is it located. Please don't just say guide, I have looked and still can't find it. I also need to know about software Sonic DVDit (want to know if it will work with ripped dvd programs) I they are offering sonic dvdit as an upgrade to sonic mydvd but, I don't know which program will work better. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Might I suggest you start with the Newbie section of Doom9:

http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/newbie_section.htm

MyDVD and DVDit can both be used to create DVD's, insert mpeg2's and build DVD menus and such. It's not specifically designed for assisting 'copying DVD's'. Until you figure out what you need to do, no, I wouldn't do the upgrade.

If you're burning DVD's from files you create from home movies or other types, DVDit/MyDVD can work fine for you. If you're just ripping movies, then you probably won't use it (or much).

Wow, I'm impressed that somebody actually knows something about DVDit. I thought that was just a useless thing that came with some burners :)

Regarding your main question, why are you asking again? You already started a similar thread yesterday in the DVD burning forum, and you got the same answer you're going to get in the DVD authoring forum. Let's take a look at that one:

Thread: how to start burning dvd's

hoops10 gave you the best answer you could hope for:

"Both of you should check out the guides at Doom9.org. Every DVD is authored differently so there is no '1 way to do everything' answer. Check out the guides, read them multiple times, then ask you questions here."

What else do you expect? The guides are there. Do you think that someone will reply to you and say, "Guess what! You're in luck! I've got a REALLY easy and simple method to copy any DVD in five minutes!"??? That's not going to happen.

The IfoEdit/VOBrator stripping guide is a little confusing, but nobody has written a better one or it would be up there. The guides on this site are as good as it gets. As hoops10 said, READ THEM. If you don't understand something, READ IT AGAIN. If you still don't understand, ask a specific question here. There is NO OTHER ANSWER. You will not get a simpler answer by begging on the forum.

Did you just spend $300 on a burner and now you're frustrated because it's not as easy as a VCR? Like hoops10 said, there's no single solution for copying a DVD. Every DVD is different, and it's up to you what you want to do to get a specific DVD to fit on a DVD-R. You have to learn the tools if you want to burn DVD's. Learn how to image and burn with DVD Decrypter. Learn how to find VOB ID's with VOBrator. Learn how to strip out things you don't want with IfoEdit. Learn how to transcode your movie to a smaller size with CCE. Learn how to deal with subtitles. Learn how to put a project together in Maestro.

It's all there in the DVD guides. Don't go to the "DVD-9 to DVD-5" guide by Trilight right away. It looks like it would be the most appropriate guide, but it's actually a very advanced guide.

The best advice I can give you is to get several DVD's you'd like to copy, and just load them all up in DVD Decrypter and look at the size. You need to start with the smallest DVD's first. First, figure out how to copy a single-layer DVD to a DVD-R. Once you've got that working, figure out how to copy a DVD-9 when the main feature is under 4.7G by stripping out the extra features. Then figure out how to strip out all but one audio track so you can fit an even bigger DVD-9 on a DVD-R. Finally, learn how to use CCE to transcode a large movie to a smaller size.

You obviously know about the guides. If you have a specific question about a specific guide, these forums are the place to ask. Don't just start asking questions like "How do I copy a DVD?" though. It just makes you look lazy.

Brett what a arrogant answer. I am sure you were just born walking and talking the computer language for making a dvd! I wasn't asking you to tell me how to do it. I have looked at those guides and one talks about one software program and then talk about another for ripping this thing. I wanted to know about a good program such as maybe dvdit or mydvd to see what other programs i might need. If you were new to making dvds and looked at the guides wouldn't you think that DVD-9 to DVD-5 would be the one to read. Well I did and got even more confused. as stated in my question I asked, don't just tell me to go to the guides. that is not enough. Maybe which (of the many)guides would be better answer. I am not LAZY EITHER!!!

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO READ MY QUESTION AND DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING MEAN OR DEGRADING. MY KNOWLEDGE WILL INCREASE GIVING CORRECT OR EVEN COMPASSIONATE FEED BACK!

The Guides are Great I am sure but which one is the Best for a beginner and to quote you Brett "It's all there in the DVD guides. Don't go to the "DVD-9 to DVD-5" guide by Trilight right away. It looks like it would be the most appropriate guide, but it's actually a very advanced guide." well only you guys know that I don't!

So again I will ask. what program works good? What comes with these programs? will I need to download a ripper before using the program or does all that come with the programs? If I you want to say guide that is fine but which guide? remember I am going dvd to dvd.

For making DVD copies, it breaks down into two ways:

For a disc that's less than 4.3gb or so, I use DVDDecrypter to create an image of the disc onto my hard disk, then use Prassi (or DVDDecrypter) to burn the image to a blank. (By the way, you MUST have the disc partition formatted for NTFS - using XP, NT or Win2000 - to support larger than 4gb as a single file)

For a larger disk, you must break it into two discs. I use Smartripper to break the disk into two parts (by chapters), write it to my hard disk, process it with IfoEdit and burn the results with Prassi.

The details for splitting the disc into two, and processing have been posted to this forum, and those DVD guides on Doom9. They work if you follow the steps recommended.

DVDDecrypter, IfoEdit and SmartRipper are all free. Prassi is the only $ program, and I use it because it came with my DVD burner. You can use Nero, Recordnow or usually whatever comes with the burner to make the disc.

Again Padre I applaud your answer. I know now what is important to me as a dvd to dvd person and can forget about the other tools used for other formats. I am very pleased that someone here remembers what it is to be new. I know what to study now and will become one of the best darn dvd to dvd people I can. I hope to never forget the what it is to be new. I pray to never respond to anyone new in the way Brett did to me.

Thank You

Thanks for telling me about your walk through for dvd to dvd. I spent alot of time in those guides trying to figure out what pretained to me and what was for other formats of copying. I applaud all who try to put those guides into easyier to understand guide.

Has anyone tried bungee dvd yet? I talked to a fella at Best Buys and he said that it will automatic make it into mpeg 2 and all you have to do is copy it on to dvd. I bet it is not that simple.

Thanks

You have to make a decision on what you want for your final dvd. Remember this:

1) If your total original dvd is less than 4.37 gbs, then just use a ripper in backup mode and burn it.

2) If your total original dvd is more than 4.37 gbs, then you can split it across 2 dvd-r's or re-author it to fit onto 1 dvd-r. Most people chooes the latter (re-authoring it to 1 dvd-r).

3) If you want to re-author, then the guides will help you. You will need Maestro and/or Scenarist to do this. You will also need CCE, dont use anything else (the quality blows everything else away).

Hope that helps, but it's easier for us to help you when you follow the guide and have questions pertaining to them.
