Ok I've been using GKnot+DivX5 for a few months now and its been working great.
I recently reinstalled Windows XP and GKnot and now my newly created avi files look really bad.
From all I can tell I'm using the EXACT same settings of the old installation I've been using.
I still have the old install on a seperate hard drive partition so I can still use it, but I really want to know how to install it on my new partition so that it will work without me booting in the old partition.

The bad videos look as if they were too highly compressed, even though I give it permission to use plenty of hard disk space. The files are also much smaller than they should be.

Example: I was trying to make a divx compression of a 45 minute Star Trek episode (NTSC interlaced video from DVD).
I give these 350MB so I can fit 2 of them on a CD, and they usually look great. I use IVTC.

Here is what they have been looking like:

Here is what they look like now:

One odd thing I noticed right away was that the dvd2avi file I save with the OLD install won't load in the new install.
In GKnot, I click Open, select my project and I get this:

So I make a new dvd2avi project, no big deal.
I then load up my project in GKnot and set all the settings

For my 45 minute videos I give it 350MB to work with like I said.
When the compression was finished I was left with a 106MB file that looks terrible.

What I think has happened here is that somehow the DivX codec wasn't installed right.
I'm using DivX 5 Pro with the ad-ware. I've blocked the ad-ware with zone alarm, but I did that before too with no problems.
The reason I think its the codec is because when I try to open a good divx file with VirtualDub, I get this:

If I open a bad file I get this:
http://recon.homeip.net/002/image13b.jpg
The difference is that in the old installation of Windows, I can open a good file successfully even though it displays that audio warning.
One thing that puzzles me if its the codec is that I can use the DivX PLAYER to view the good files just fine. I just can't make new ones.

I can't think of anything I missed in the new install that I must have done successfully by accident in the old install.
I really need help on this one, I've used about as much trouble shooting as I can think of, and I'd like to not have to reboot in the old partition every time I want to compress a video. :)

Thanks in advance.

Reinstall DivX
Install the latest DirectX release
Install the lastest vga drivers
Install the latest via drivers if you have a via chipset

You'll want to uninstall DivX, then go through your registry and delete every reference to DivX you can find. update the rest of your system as well, just as DJ Bobo said.

Also, have you tried viewing your XP converted videos in your old OS? do they still look like crap? (probably so, but just to double check).

I've had nothing but problems with XP for playback, I've never encoded in it, I've always used 2000 for that. I basically am running 2000 for video encoding/viewing, and XP for everything else. I find this works better both for speed and reliability (nothing ever changes in my 2000 setup, thus I don't have to deal with alot of crap XP likes to give). Just something to consider...

I've noticed that and it makes me maaaaaad !!! In win98 or winME everything looks great but in win2k or XP postprocesing within the codec is just not turning on !!! I have Abit Siluro GF4Ti4200 and it drives me mad becouse I've did everything but it doesn't metter.
Postrocesing just doesn't want to be turned on. I've had a GF4MX440 and everything was just fine. I'we also noticed that some TNT2,Vanta and M64 have the same problem but what I have is a bloody monster.
I repeat that this only applyes on Win2k/XP systems. In win98 and ME everything works fine.

I've tried with all kind of stuff from reinstalling Windows to changeing the BIOS of GFX. Nothing helps. I've also tried FFDSHOW filter but no luck there eather. If somebody could help me and maybe milions of us outhere with the same problem.

Thanks

Well I was just thinking about how it was annoying to be told the obvious - "Reinstall DivX". But I figured before I said anything, I should at least try it. After all I *do* know how to install software...

I reinstalled the DivX codec. and... It works!! Go figure.
THANKS. :)

BTW, it works great even on XP. I don't know enough about any post processing that you guys might be talking about, but my divx results look at least as good as new VHS copies.
I can record a movie in about 3 hours, thanks to my new P4 2.4GHz processor with 533MHz FSB. Boo yah! Talk about fast.

Thanks again.

Hi-

I'm on XP, and have the same Abit vid card, and using the ffdshow post processor, everything works just fine. So I don't believe it to be either an OS or vid card problem (although my other computer with an AIW Radeon card has a slightly better picture, I believe). Maybe I'm just lucky when I read of the problems others have. Have you fooled around with the colors-if you're using 32 bit, then switch to 24 bit, or vice-versa.
