I was able to watch these AVI's on a PII 400 with DivX 4 and 5 installed. (They wouldn't play with DivX 5, they're a bit old) On an Athlon 800, I installed the same codecs and DivX 3, and windows Media Player plays the sound, shows me some green garbage and quits after a few seconds. the DivX player that came with DivX 5 plays the files, but it keeps flickering, and restarts the sound when I rewind or ff.

Since it's not about the speed of the machine, is it because of the order in which I installed the codecs? Or what is this? Can you suggest any other players?

Thanks

Edit: I'm using Win2000 Pro on both computers

Well, never heard of such a problem, but a few remarks that could help ( however not really solve the problem ) :

First, for the decoding, give a try to ffdshow ( download here : http://ffdshow.sekxx.org/ffdshow-20020913.exe ). It allows to decode DivX 3, 4 5 and Xvid, without having to install the differents codecs, and avoids any interaction issues that could occur.

Second, for the playback, use a real player, like Zoom Player or BSPlayer
( both available on the download page of doom9 ). They are at the moment the reference ( at least until powerdivx4 is out )

Hope this will work.
