ok, i have made a few divx movies before, so im not really a newbie... i've used many different types of programs, but now i wanted to make a divx4.01 encoded movie, so i followed the directions on doom9.net's wesite for xmpeg encoder, and i did everything EXACTLY as it was showed. when I try to encode the movie i get these 2 errors:
1. error: invalid log file. OR I get: Fatal ERROR: Could not open log file for reading. (I always get the same second message, though.)
2. FlaskMPEG Warning: An error occurred when trying to generate the file. Check that you're not using the output file or the program is setup correctly.
I am almost 100% certain that these errors are related to the "log file" which contains the settings for the double pass vbr settings, but i don't know where to look, or more importantly, what to look for. please help.

Hello,
did you perform the first pass completely before trying to perform the second pass?
Your problem seems to be, that the DivX4 codec couldn't find the log file which is created during the first pass (using 2-pass vbr method).
So after you ran the first pass, you have the log file in the directory you have chosen in the divx-codec options.
As doom9 writes in his guide, you have to start the second pass manually (by changing "2 pass vbr - first pass" to "2 pass vbr - second pass" in the codec options) after the first pass is done, and then the codec will find the log file.
For your information: first and second pass take the same time (for example if you're using a 1ghz system and encode a movie with 2 hours, every pass takes its 5 hours).

I downloaded Xmpeg4.1b and right now i feel a little overwhelmed by all the settings, so I think I'll stay away from that until I get a better grasp on it, or until someone writes a guide for it. Anyways, I cannot encode the first video file (2-pass second-pass) as I mentioned in my original and 2nd post, due to this log error i described in the first post. Anyone have any help for me? I would greatly appreciate it.

>i din't run the first pass yet, thats the problem...
Well then run the first pass first! Then run the second pass second. (I wonder why they're named that way. Maybe your supposed to run the first pass first. No that can't be right. I'll run the second pass first. :) )
You get the log error because you didn't run the first part of the two-passes yet.
Do this.
1)Select the Option, Two passes-First Pass. You need to run this first since it creates a log file. Choose the location and name you want for the log file in the lower-right hand corner.
2)Run the first pass.
3)Change it to the Two passes-Second Pass option. Keep the log file the same because it will try the open the log file in the first.
4)Run the second pass.

Ok, my bad. I read the guide wrong, but the problem still persists... I am supposed to do the 2-pass first-pass first, BUT - it still gives me this error:
FlaskMPEG Warning: An error occurred when trying to generate the file. Check that you're not using the output file or the program is setup correctly.
I have tried everything to get around this... Creating a file with a .log extension, and specifying its location when i can select a location, i made files that pointed to ones that had a .flask extension, but all to no avail. Please help. I've got the exact same errors in WIN2k adv. Server, and Win98SE, so i have pretty myuch ruled out the OS. Any suggestions? As always, your help is greatly appreciated.

Did you try Vdub and read both the guides about it?

Hi, I have just started to look at the guide and the useage of Xmpeg and was totally buggered up by the guides...
I then read this thread and it all clicked!!!
What I suggest you do is (if you can select the OpenDML mode, if not, then I cannot help) select openDML mode, then go and select Divx 4.01 from the Output Format Options. Once in the Divx 4.01 dialog box, select all your options.
THEN...
then go to Global Project Objects and then in the general tab, select the following:
2nd Pass Enabled (for multipass Plugin, and
2nd Pass Enabled (for Divx4)
and then click on the 2nd Pass Plugin Settings and select all the options like you did the first time.
So basicly you have to do it all around the other way than what is said in the guide: select the first pass first and then in the options dialog, select the second pass.
I hope this is a bit easier to understand... if not, reply here and i can set up a site that has the whole thing with screenshots that may make it a bit easier.

I have those errors too! I think it's to do with the DivX 4.0 codec though cos I have the same log file problem in FlasKMPEG. This log file error is doing my head in, somebody please help! I even reinstalled the DivX 4.0 codec again, but no help :(

Being a newb too, I made the same error.
I corrected it by setting global options to 1st Pass, and then Output file to uncompressed to both audio and video.
Its compliling now, but I may end up with a huge file, unless that was the intended way of setting it up. I assume afterwards I will set this setting to 2nd pass and recompliling a 2nd time.
Anyone out there correct me if I've done something wrong. Ty

Hey,
How you getting on with this xmpeg stuff - sorted?
I'm runing it for the first time now - single pass DivX 4 via Flask doesn't give me a very good result - DivX 3 was much better.
Anyways, I'm using xmpeg and Divx4 for the first time. My first pass is in progress (estimated time for 1:41:18 long movie is only 1.5 hours on my DDR/Athlon 1200 machine, which is nice).
I see the log file being created right now, so I know that if the second pass fails because it can't find the log file that I know for sure where the log is to tell it.
I think this should work....but how does it comapre to a 1822kbps DivX 3 film......I am waiting to see.
cheers,

I had the same problem.
It's not the codec that's bugging you... it's the avi plugin!
I suggest: 1) remove the avi plugin from xmpeg (aviplugin.cm.xmpeg)
2) copy the avi plugin from flask and paste this file
in xmpeg directory
3) rename the flask plugin to the xmpeg plugin
(aviout.cm.flask -> aviout.cm.xmpeg)
This worked for me.
Does anyone now wy the xmpeg-avi-plugin doesn't work for everybody?
And is there a fix for it because the flask-plugin only allows RGB-mode.
