I want to buy a funny little Pioneer AO3, since the burner and the media are getting more and more affordable these days, and after reading the specs, some questions come to me, which I don't know the answers to.
-I don't want to buy something that is expensive, without being sure it will be a standard store media in the near future. Does anyone of you really believe that DVD-R and DVD-RW are going to be the equivalent to the CDs in the next year or so? Or is there any reason why I shouldn't buy a DVD burner, because DVDs will never be as spread as CDs are?
-No burner can support double layer, double side. Ain't that strange, when they are looking forward to the blue ray? Is double layer/double side just around the corner, or will it ever appear at reasonable prices)? Where do the double layer/double side DVDs (the normal video DVDs) come from? How are they burned?
-I am also afraid of possible incompatibilities. Why are DVD-RAM and DVD+RW not supported? Are they in any aspect better or worse? Other burners supporting all formats are really expensive...
-I have read that there is a lot of movement in the optical storage market. Blue Ray seems to be the next big thing, but it will marketed at very high prices, so it won't become a standard in the near future. BUT I HAVE READ A POST IN ONE OF THE DOOM9 FORUMS, WITH LINKS ABOUT A NEW LASER TECHNOLOGY WHICH NEEDED ALMOST NO CHANGE IN THE DRIVE DESIGN, AND WHICH WOULD INCREASE (x4 OR SO) THE AMOUNT OF STORAGE DATA. I CAN'T REMEMBER WHICH THREAD WAS (ANYBODY KNOWS?), BUT IT MAKES ME WONDER IF I SHOULD WAIT LONGER.... But the problem is that I have ADSL, and I have to store very big files. I need the DVD burner...
