just curious about this, haven't seen it asked before. I know you could put 800 mb on a 80 minute cdr. Does the same apply for a 4.7gb dvdr?

excuse my ignorance but why are dvd-rs different. What format is data burn in on a dvd?

DVDs in general are different. The CD started out as an audio medium, and was then adapted for use as a data medium, which gave rise to the 2 ways of storing data on them. DVD, on the other hand, were designed for data storage, so there is only one way to store data, but many ways to store audio or video.
In a nutshell - CD puts data into a container designed for audio. DVD puts audio/video and anything you want in a container designed for data.
