View Full Version : encoding svcd (mpeg2) files with TMGPenc

I've read that this can be done and I searched and still feel a bit confused over one aspect of it. My first problem was that I could create an SVCD (mpeg2) file, but then I couldn't open that file in TMPGenc. I found the m2v plug-in and that opens the file, but not the audio. I then found that I could demultiplex the mpeg2 file. Is that how one goes about converting an svcd to vcd (using the mp2 file and m2v)? I've installed a mpeg2 codec (I use WinDVD), but still it seems like I should see a video and an audio track when I'm in the conversion window.

Perplexed...

Just a suggestion:

First copy all your .dat files from your SVCDs onto harddisk. Then use DVD2AVI (it's in the DVD2SVCD package for example) to generate a DVD2AVI project file (.d2v) and to demultiplex your MP2 sound. I think you don't have to change them in order to generate a VCD.
Next use Avisynth as frameserver for decoding (via mpeg2dec.dll plugin) and resizing to VCD resolution. You might install GordianKnot to set up the Avisynth script file (.avs). This one can now be opened easily in TMPGEnc.

Now you transcode your video to MPEG1 in TMPGEnc. For multiplexing take bbMPEG (in the DVD2SVCD package) and finally burn your images with VCDEasy.

Complicated isn't it? Check the guides on format conversion and VCD creation on doom9's site.

Hope that helps a little,

Damn that IS complicated. Thanks for the guide.

yeah, it sure is. Now I have another question, let's say that I have the file in mpeg2 format (correct SVCD settings to burn with SVCD), but I haven't burnt it yet. Do I still need to go through all that? Shouldn't I be able to pull the mpeg2 file back into tmpgenc?

thanks!

Hm,

you've got an SVCD standard MPEG2 stream with video and audio and everything? Why do you want to reencode that? Suggestion: Demultiplex in TMPGEnc audio and video (MPEG Tools -> SVCD stream -> simple demultiplex). Now multiplex again with bbMPEG and split at the right size (e.q. for 80 min CD at 795 MB). This can be done automatically by bbMPEG (again check the guides on SVCD creation). The resulting MPEG2 files with the right size can now be burned in VCDEasy.

I guess the reason I was trying, was that a friend of mine had encoded a file with the settings of 720X576 (PAL DVD settings). But other friend couldn't create a SVCD with that file in VCDEasy. So, I tried pulling the file into TMPGenc to re-encode it. It wouldn't accept it. (It wouldn't accept my standard mpeg2 files either). Then I found the mpeg2 plug-in. It will take the file, but not the audio. Now I realize that I can do a simple demultiplex on it. Which will work, I just thought that I should be able to pull the file back in without having to demultiplex.

Thanks!

O.K.,

if you want to have a lower resolution you have to reencode. Still I recommend to demultiplex the audio via DVD2AVI and to decode and resize via DVD2AVI -> mpeg2dec.dll -> Avisynth. In my opinion it is the superior method if you want to have speed and quality at the same time. As far as I know TMPGEnc only does bilinear resizing while Avisynth can use bicubic. Also most of the experienced forum members seem to state that DVD2AVI is by far the best decoder for MPEG2 streams.

I'm afraid it is too late, but if you want to make from this file SVCD with VCDEasy simply uncheck in the main window of VCDEasy "Perform some MPEG compliance check" (I don't remember the exact text).
