This was a quite long discussion at some other boards.
Basically in a nut shell:

DVD-r/-RW

is said to be a TAD more compatible with standalone players.
The media is currently very cheap.

However, sometimes you have to burn a SLOW speeds (1x) for these cheap discs.

DVD+r/+rw

is GOING to be supported by microsoft.
Media is MORE expensive, but this is the latest format.
Quick at formatting/closing sessions, fast burning 2.4x, and is "Supposedly" better with data as it car "read/write" at the same time (some kind of verification that the media is correctly burned etc.) DVD-r is not AS safe (but sure good enough for many)

So, you gotta count, do you want to burn a LOT of dvds?
then you might want to look at the DVD-rw

If you want the "latest" and perhaps a bit better, but more expensive. Go for DVD+

All this is what I have heard, hence not my personal view.

Hope this helps a bit on your way.
