View Full Version : One movie on DVD-R using CCE: robshot vs 4 pass VBR?

My understanding is that the robshot method is designed for low-bitrate rips and also to reduce cpu time.

Is there really any benefit to using it at higher bitrates (say 3000 or more) when doing 4 pass VBR?

I prefer something safe and secure :D Especially since Bach's critique and modifications of the robshot method in the DVD2SVCD Advanced forum has muddied the waters...he says it's counterproductive to fiddle with the advanced settings (removing grey areas, etc).

Thanks ;)

is it actally counterproductive to remove macroblocks from the video *before* encoding?

the 'advanced settings' are for optimizing the video bitrate, if you just want to use 3mbit and multipass, and not worry about the grey areas (almost all progressive framed videos wont mind 3mbit avg) then go ahead, the multiple passes in CCE will help distribute the bitrate to bring the Q down as low as possible without the messing around.

Thank you fot the reply.

Here's a quote from Bach (post is stickied in DVD2SVCD Advanced Forum):

= > the red regions do not correspond to images with distortion. They correspond to completely black parts of the film, that are codified with highest quantisation and very low bitrates;
= > the gray areas, if exists, already have practically the highest allowed bitrate and any attempt of change it to green will result in the creation of a new gray region in GOPs that were previously in green regions

The above is contingent on following his instructions in regard to Q factor, etc.

Anyway, I think I'll just stick with 4 pass VBR...
