View Full Version : CCE quality dependent on CPU spd ?

Hi everyone,
I'm a newbie, so bear with me if my question seem out of place. I plan on buying a canopus advc-50(analog to digital converter) to convert some foreign movies into DV format, and use CCE to convert the DV format into DVD compliant MPEG. However my cpu speed is quite low(pentium3 533ghz, 256ram). So my question is, assuming the analog to digital conversion process is perfect, will the quality of the CCE encoding be affected by my slow CPU spd ? Am I correct in thinking that the quality is not affected only the speed of the encoding process ? How long would the encoding take for the CCE setting described in doom9's CCE guide ? Also, is this the right way to go about digitizing vhs into dvds ?

thanks very much for answering my question, George

Theoretically, it shouldn't be. If you install CCE correctly without having any problem, it'd work fine on your PC. CPU speed affects only encoding time. For instance, if you can think very quick, you can solve any problem quicker than the others. On the other hand, you may have to spend time longer to encode, transcode, or whatever, than others using better CPUs.

Yes, you're right :) There're several factors affecting the quality of your output movie but your CPU's speed.

It depends what is your input and the parameters of CCE you want to set, and this when your CPU speed comes to play.

I'm not an expert on VHS2DVD. However, AFAIK DV Codec is lossy. Some threads have reported that the compression ratio was 5:1. My friend used Pinnacle Studio and the compression ratio was 9:1, which is not a very good input source if you want to use CCE to compress again. The movie quality will be lost more and more. You better use HUFFYUV codec. Its compression ratio is 2.5:1 as someone said. Beware that you need lots of space if you want to capture any movie with HUFFYUV :)

Huffyuv is completely lossless, so the captured clip will be exactly the same as the input.

However, if you want to spare some HD space and want to encode somewhat faster, I recommend a MJPEG codec. PicVideo MJPEG is a good one and not too expensive either. I use it at the quality setting 19 with both luma and chroma quality at 2 and won't notice any visible difference compared to a Huffyuv capture. The filesize is a lot smaller and CCE encodes faster:)

on P3 500 (katami) CCE SP gets a speed of about 0.5
