Hi all, i just got a firewire card, it some brand i never heard of but it uses a TI chipset which is why i got it cause i heard they were pretty good and i got a good price for it. I got it mostly for catpure with my DV cam, thing is when i installed it, it detected fine by Windows XP, but i has a description saying "1394 Net adapter" but in another part its labeled as "TI OCHI compliant IEEE host controller" i want to know if this should work fine with my DV cam or not, i cant test it right now cause i lent it to my brother in law,(its a Panasonic btw) Thanks.

Yes, should work fine (BTW: it's OHCI compliant, and that's the important part). Firewire is the same as IEEE 1394; you can also connect PCs with Firewire cards at high speed (e.g. instead of using Ethernet cards). To the system it's just another network adapter.

U definitely need to worry about the compatibility between your 1394 card and any soft u would buy (don't trust, test it yourself).

I know some if usefull

Well

Encoding softs such as realproducer or windoz media tech are rather sure, ie u can use any firewire card to run'em.Except Sorenson squeeze (streaming for Studio Mx)wich is a bit more risky.

Editing softs : Premiere can handle any cards, even those pieces of trash from Pinnacle, but in terms of editing it's a pain in the a$$.
Final cut is mac dedicated and i assume that u run under windoz so...
Avid Xpress Dv is the suppaKiller of editing (v2.0 and 3.0 for all, 3.5 is XP only) but doesn't like 1394 cards that costs more than 45$(incredible but true!)U can find a list of supported card on the AVID website.
Vdub is a one case, i've never been able to make him handle my card (maybe it's impossible but only tried twice...)

Another thing : u may pay attention to the driver u're using for ur card, the most used one is a Texas Instr. one, not the best anyway.

About your camcorder, be aware that the supporting cam-1394 depends on several factor :

- the inner settings of the cam
- the os (avoid XP)
- the soft
- the driver
- and sometimes( when the day was hard and the rainy clouds are in the sky)the other pci devices u have...

Oh sorry, i didn't mean that it won't .
I just experienced that it is more difficult to operate with chosen soft, cam and soft under XP. I work with XpressDV wich version 3.5 is designed for XP but, there, won't support anymore my "ultimate" ohci card.
I say "ultimate " cause it perfectly works with anything. and costs 35€.I can find back it's ref. if wanted...
