Please bear with me ive been using gknot with the 502 pro codec but apart from "visible" settings I am unable to find how to get to the pro features of 502.If I use dvdx 2.0 I am able to access the settings but I dont use dvdx as the quality is not the same as gknot.

Four of the most common settings can be set within Gknot from the Encoder tab:
Bi-directional encoding (B-frames)
GMC
Quarter Pixel
Psychovisuals (none, light, normal, strong)
For other settings, such as source pre-processing, keyframe intervals...you must do the encoding manually after creating the .avs script in GKnot.

Doom9 used to have a guide before GKnot supported DivX5. The process is pretty simple. The following is not a detailed guide -- just the main steps to take. If you have questions, just ask:
Optionally transcode the audio to .mp3 from the GKnot encoder tab. Put the .mp3 or .ac3 file size into the Audio A on the Bitrate tab, and include the appropriate interleaving overhead. Save your .avs file. Open it in Vdub. Set video to Fast Recompress. Select DivX5.02 pro compression, then push the "Configure" button. Make all your manual DivX pro adjustments. Use the bitrate from GKnot. If doing a 2-pass encoding, you should "save as avi" twice, changing only from pass-1 to pass-2 in the DivX pro configure GUI. Manually interleave the .avi with your .mp3 or .ac3 audio using Nandub.
[EDIT]If you want to do a compressibility test with the same special settings, you can do so. Edit the .avs to enable the SelectRangeEvery command, do a first pass, and load the resulting log file. I believe the name must include the resolution to load properly, it's been a while since I've done it that way.
