hi,

what would happen if i ripped a movie from a dvd, converted the vobs with DVD2AVI and then recompiled the dvd files back to vobs (say in Maestro) and then burned to a dvd, then ripped the movie and converted the vob's with DVD2AVi over and over again, repeating the process? would i lose quality every time i ripped with DVD2AVI? would colors get flushed, or the picture become less precise and sharp, etc? or is it all pure digital transferring/conversions and therefore it would all stay the same? Has anyone tried this?

Many thanks,

I think you would add a 'digital' generation each time you decompress/compress.

1. DVD->Divx, add one generation (quantization errors, scaling algo, color conv., etc)

2. divx->dvd, same as above, another generation added

etc,etc

I'm not sure what the effects of the additional generations would show up as, probably like you said, softer, muddy picture, funny enough, probably just like regular analog generation loss on tapes.

If you were using uncompressed formats, you wouldn't end up adding generations.
