View Full Version : Can't encode with a width greater than 800 pixels?

I have some video with a resolution of 852x480 that I would like to encode at that resolution without cropping or resizing. However, when I go to the resolution tab in GK, the slider will not allow me to have a width greater than 800 pixels. Is this 800 pixel width a limitation of the DivX codecs, GK, or what?
I have successfully encoded it at 720x480, however, the picture appears compressed (or "squished" rather) horizontally. Should I try it again at 710x400 to maintain the same aspect ratio if I can't get around the 800 pixel limit?
Thanks.

You can edit the .avs script that Gordian Knot creates, and then comment out or remove the cropping and resizing commands. This would leave your video unresized.
Comment lines all start with a "#".
Use the Edit button at the bottom of the window that pops up when you press "Save & Encode"

That seems to work but I've run into another problem:
Windows Media Player sees the .vob file as 852x480 but DVD2AVI sees it as 720x480.
I can get an 852x480 output by setting the resize in the .avs file to 852x480, but if I comment out both cropping and resizing, I get an output of 720x480.

Read Doom9's guide 'Aspect Ratios Explained'! (http://www.doom9.org/aspectratios.htm)
It comes down to this: all DVD's are stored as 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL) and are then resized to the correct aspect ratio when viewing.

Ah ok. So the problem lies in WMP setting the correct aspect ratio for the .vob file but not for the compressed DivX file. A file like this would need to be played with the DivX alpha player for best results.
Thanks for your help. :)
