hi.
I sold my old NEC-Drive because it didn't recognize DVD-RWs. So I purchased a Toshiba SDM 1612. That drive is a real sh*t. Never rips faster than 2x on copyprotected discs.
So what drive can you suggest my which is,
-fast in ripping CSS-DVDs
-quiet
It would be nice if it could also read Audios with CDS & Key2Audio, but this isn't a must.
THX already for your help....

Hello
I have an Acer DVD-Rom 1640A which is really fast, with 16x DVD read speed and 40x CDs read speed, never had problems with it.

Before you buy a new drive, try other Firmware. I recently updated the firmware of my Pioneer 104S 10x DVD and suddenly it was working well again.
Before the update I had thought it was hardware-damaged because some months ago the DVD read speed had suddenly gone down to ~1.5MB/s, the CD read speed had been reduced to ~20x.
The new firmware fixed it, now it's ripping encrypted DVD's up to 9x again and the CD read speed is again 16-40x CAV (like it should be).

Already patched FW, also for having rc-free, but it didn't help. For now I think I will buy either a drive from LG or Liteon.

What about the ripping speed on copy-prtected discs (CSS)? How much can you get?
And is this drive noisy?

I am a big fan of the Pioneer's as well. The 16x can be had for 45$ and will rip DVDs usig smartripper at 9-10x dpending on the movie, at the lowest 6x.

oops, I am too late, but I wanted to say that I JUST got the Liteon 165H today.
It reads several discs that my DVD writed couldnt recognize.
ANyway, so far, I am very happy with it.
Plus for those ripping PS games, cd text, etc. this drive can read the Subchannel :)

what difference is between 165H and 163H ?

This is the only difference I can find on the website:
165H
¡EConform to DVD-Multi Standard, Access all CD Family & DVD Family Media
But the 163(d) can read just about any dvd so there is no BIG diff I think, just a bit newer.
BTW, you said you paid 40 Euros? where in Europe? I bought it for 55 :(

thanks, seems that they have good pretty good prices.
Well, you can always check when you get your DVD, it might just be a 165 in a 163 box :)

I have a Pioneer 16X DVD-106S and although it rips really fast, watching movies is impossible with it. Why? It has to be the loudest damn thing ever made!
Switching to silent mode doesn't help much. And not to mention, the drive gets incrediably hot. I practically fear for my DVD discs since they usually get too hot to touch (literally!) after 2h of watching.
And it sucks at EAC's secure mode audio ripping. Caches audio and no L2 correction. Rips at 2.4x at silent mode, 4.5x at über-loud mode (90 dB).
My friend has a NEC 12X and it's perfect in every imaginable way. It's fast, it doesn't make a sound and the DVD discs are cool to touch after intensive ripping and watching.
I sincerely believe that both LG or Liteon DVD drives are better products.

I also had a NEC 12x before and it was a good drive I think, although it didn't read DVD-RW at all and DVD-R only some worked.

it had problems reading the end of dvd-rw
my 163 had none of those problems!
