I ordered a DVD burner last week and expect it soon. While I will be using it for other projects, I'd like to put alot of Divx movies I have onto DVD. Resizing to 720x480 wouldn't give me the best results and making SVCDs out of them is always a possiblity. I was thinking of using CVD, but closing all GOPs and checking DVD compliant and throw 2-3 movies onto a DVD-R (no disc swapping with SVCD and quality would be the same as SVCD anyway). I was just wondering if others have gone this route with other sources and what was your experience with 1/2 D1 encoding and authoring.

There is no reason to close any gops, that was a "tip" some users discovered, after a misstyping I made at VCDhelp's CVD presentation....
Just use "IBBPBBPBBPBBPBB" for PAL or "IBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBB" for NTSC
With this gop stucture (15 PAL, 18 NTSC), you don't have any compatibility problems

I'd also eventually like to use 352x480 to make some DVD-R's from non-DVD sources... so any tips from other people's experiences would be nice before I get into it :)

I've just started on encoding some and will post some comments later. Hopefully more people do too.

I was using 1/2D1 when I was on my miniDVD days. It gives a nice crisp picture even at lower bitrates of 1600kbs. I was having my miniDVDs at 3 or 4 cds per film and it was a pain switching every 30 mins or so. It remainded me of the Laserdisk era where there were 50 mins max per side.

My susggestion is go for it. It is a lot better than 1/4 D1 at 352x240.
