Hi all!

I just tested capturing about 20 secs video using firewire and Adobe Premiere. After saving the file (recognised as AVI Type2 by aDVanced DV File Converter v.153 - http://members.chello.hu/mezei.attila/dvtools/), virtualdub still says that it requires VFW to recompress the video, that my decompressor, 'dvsd' is unknown. Am i missing something guys? Please help! Thanks!

install the mainconcept dv demo codec , it will decompress/play , free you just wont be able to use it to compress files

thanks for the reply. do i really have to install a dv codec? i thought you could load it fine in virtualdub as long as it's type2? btw, i just tried ulead videostudio 6 and saved the file as dv type2, still can't do. I also tried avisynth, but nada.....any other thoughts?

yes you need a dv codec , i have a pinnacle dv 500 dvd , i cant view it in vd or avisynth if i do not have the main concept installed. ive tried others like the canopus but that dosent work for some reason it seems to only work in vd with the main concept codec, though you can view it media player with the MS-dv codec.

You need a DV VfW (Video for Windows) codec installed. Mainconcept in a good choice, but you can also use other codecs like the Panasonic codec, Canopus, or Adaptec.

I just installed the mainconcept codec and everything's working fine now. My question now is since i'm using panasonic vidcam, would its codec work better than others? cheers!

The Panasonic codec's output is identical to that of Microsoft's codec. I believe it's a "hack" to make the MS codec VfW compatible.

thanks for the quick reply, bb. mainconcept's codec is working fine for me right now so i guess i'll just keep the panasonic's for backup. cheers!

the madness continues.

I run this panasonic pdvcodec1 and get some bizarre window with strange letters and a browse tab. It only allows me to browse folders not files. what am suppose to accomplish with this program?

i remember doing very well in school so I am mystified why I can't simply make a decent de-interlaced properly resized divx file out of a raw dv avi.

right now my type 2 dv avis are not opening in vdub - hence the use of this *%&*%&&%&*% program.

OK. So I figured out how to extract the pvcodec.dll file and with the absence of any guide on how to install it, I copied it to the windows/system directory. result: still not able to open dv type 2 in vdub.

you need to register the dll file. putting it into a directory won't make vdub recognise it. i remember you can use regsvr32.exe to register under winxp, not sure under other os...you need to specify what type of pc you're running. cheers!

I tried regsvr32.exe c:\media\panasonic\pdvcodec.dll

error: the dll file was loaded but the DllRegistryserver entry point was not found.

what am i missing here?
