Check this out...

This will play your movies from accross your network...
I called the company and they said the only problem people are having is finding the Sony Ethernet Adapter for the Playstation 2.

This is a good news, but will be better days when this monster console "demostrates" its power and comfort playing itself MPEG4 :-|.

(it has two 128-bit vector calculation units working similar as P4's SSE2, doubled)

It is playing the file... it's just using the the hardrive on the network for storage... Or is it using the computer to serve the frames???

from their FAQ:
Q: What kind of digital media can I use with your software?

<cut />

A good guideline would be this: if source exists or is made available for creating or playing a particular type of media on Linux, we will likely be able to add support for that format in the near future. An example would be support for Ogg-Vorbis audio and video compression

hmmm... now this seems a bit suspicious... Another sigma designs like approach? I don't see any note about sources being available, I could not find any notice on which MP4 decoding engine is used and frankly I don't believe they wrote MP4 decoder themselves from scratch... when there's a source code available out there.

@unplugged: nope, it is virtually impossible to transfer uncompressed video realtime over networks; and definitely impossible over 802.11b

Right, to be honest with calculations :D (720*576*2*25 is too much even for 100 Mbit/s theoretical bandwidth).
Anyway, still hope that job will be done also by DVD/CDs... :o
