View Full Version : VERY VERY odd increase in encoding speed, then crash (Training day & CCE 2.50)

What's up folks,

today I tried to rip and convert Training Day. As you can see in the log, Temporal Smoother is on, as well as sharpen, bicubic resize and anti noise. Even with my XP1800, one wouldn't expect an RT of more than 0.9-1.0, especially for I never got beyond the 1.3 (no TS or sharpen) rate in other conversions (which seems too slow for my CPU, btw., but I can't find the bottleneck...). Now fasten your seatbelts, ladies and gentlemen... Training day was encoded at a speed of up to 2.1 !!!!! 0.8 RT's above my previosu max. encoding speed!!! At least that's what the programm said, I ain't trusting that, though. Then, at 20%, CCE crashed.

Are the two incidents somehow related? And if so, what can I do about it? I don't think this is your average CCE crash, that'S why I'm posting this.

I'm no expert - but usually when this happens (I some times get 4.0+, also on an Athlon 1800+) it's avisynth that has experienced a problem. Try viewing the mpv file that CCE has produced. It will probably at some point be black with some red text. The red text is the error message from avisynth. Sometimes it can help you debugging.

@pickaxxe.

I'm even less of an expert than others, but you might try a short test with the goal of isolating the problem to a specific s/w:

Encode several chapters using same CCE settings (CCR, 2350 bitrate) as you did and then using VBR (3 pass w/ 300 min, 2000 avg, 2300 max avg). Compare the encode times and post results if there is a significant difference.

Good luck

Thanks for your replies, guys. Unfortunately, things are looking even grimier than I first thought. My entire system has slowed down tremendously, from one day to another. I really have no idea what exactly caused this (maybe that "missing aspienum.vxd"-error halting the system during Win98 boot process?) but I suspect those problems to also be responsible for the problems with CCE/SVCD. I mean, check this:

Ripping speed (old= yesterday/new=today):

~10800/~8000

Entire process pre-encoding(ripping ifo, extracting subtitles and 2 audio streams, converting audio): ~ 1 hour. Now 1 hour 20 has passed and
BeSweet just started the second audio stream, which will take another 25 minutes => 1 h 45 minutes... I'm starting to get angry here. :angry: And no, the OS-install is brandnew, 1 1/2 weeks old... format c:, I guess.

Well, I just had the "speeding problem" again, with a different movie. And I found out that it was the "sharpen" option that caused the error. What's this with avisynth thing I read about so much?

i think i remember reading somewhere that sharpen crashed some people's encodings of shrek, and when they turned off sharpen, it didn't crash...maybe something about a lot of dark parts and the video bitrate being too low..i dunno

anyways, try turning off sharpen. and if you want to read more about avisynth check out a great review on framesersving over at www.lukesvideo.com
or avisynth.org

If you do a searcg in the whole doom9 forum you will find mention of another sharpen filter called unfilter. You can try that new one and see if it works for you. To use it you would have to edit the .avs file though.
