im using nero to burn the vob files to a dvd-r, and it refuses to burn, saying that the dvd files are invalid. i have ripped the vobs with dvd decrypter and used dvd decrypter to remove all of the streams except for the movie and the english audio. any help would be greatly appreciated.

You don't mention if you have used Ifoedit to correct ifos, bups etc.. Also the Video_TS ifo & bup files , directories VIDEO_TS AUDIO_TS.Have you followed the guides? more information please.
Have a peak at http://mpucoder.kewlhair.com/derrow/copy.html for a short point by point guide for Ifoedit.

i checked out the link... quite helpful. a little more straightforward and digestible than the doom9 guides, but theres a couple of things im still not sure about that are unclear in all of the guides.

1. am i not supposed to use stream processing in dvd decrypter?
2. when i rip the vob files, they all have funny names, much longer than vts_01_0.vob or whatever they looked like on the dvd. im not at work so i cant test anything until tomorrow, so i dont know exactly what it renames the files to. is there a concrete structure for naming of files in order for the dvd-r to play in a set top player?
3. if i am using ifoedit to strip streams, do i save the new ifo file and the new vobs in a separate folder with separate names?

sorry if these questions seem silly, but i just cant seem to get it to work and i only have short amounts of time to mess around with the burner at work so i dont have the time to really knuckle down with it and understand it properly.

Here we go:-

1. It is best not to use stream processing when ripping the disk. As I understand it, just rip the disk first and them strip the streams using Ifoedit.
2. I think the funny names you are getting is because DVD Decrypter (which is an excellent program) adds files which are logs etc. I would say to start with, rip using Smart Ripper which does'nt give you any extra files.
For DVD Spec you must have a VTS_01 Vobset even if it is not used, as the standalone player will look for it and fail if it is not there.
3. When you strip with Ifoedit you need to set up a new directory e.g. 'stripped' to save the files into. These stripped files will be called exactly the same names as the original ones and Ifoedit will recreate the ifo & bup files. Make sure that you copy the VTS_xx_0.VOB files into the directory with the new files as ifoedit will not process this one.

I hope this helps -- Happy Ripping.

FWIW since this information is OT for this thread... The current version of DVD Decrypter appends PGC number and Angle numbers when it rips the VOB files. This feature has some downsides with programs that expect the old file naming style.

Lightning (DVD Decrypter creator) has indicated in the DVDD forums that this feature has already been made optional for the next version which is in progress.

The extra files contain chapter information in a format used by different programs. I have found the OGG version useful for OGM creation. They can almost certainly be deleted.

thanks heaps, i had my first success on friday. easy rider minus all of the crap wound up being around 2.7gb and played perfectly on a set top player. ive got some more questions though - midnight cowboy main movie is about 6.6gb, and minus all of the extraneous crap i dont reckon it can get down to 4.3gb. what do you have to do to fit it on to a 4.3gb dvd? can you get dvd-9 dvd-r discs?

thanks for your time

To reduce the content to fit within the 4.37GB limit you will need to re-encode the video (audio may remain AC3 or be rencoded as well) or you could burn it to two DVD-5. There are a variety of guides on the doom9 site for this which you can find here. (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvdr-guides.htm) There are a lot of options you may choose relative to features but plan ahead for how you wish to replay the DVD wrt compatibility.

You cannot buy or burn DVD-9 discs (2-layer).

Congratulations on your first success. It is all down hill from here, once you get it right do quite a few and then start experimenting with things. Ifoedit is a great programme and there is lots to learn about its uses.
I always put onto 2 x DVD-R's, especilly as the price of the media is coming down all the time. It also usually leaves you enough room to get the extras on as well as the film.

Happy ripping
